And they cast a dim, yellow light about 20 feet.

I used to work in a gas station and hated replacing seal beams. It took longer than doing a complete grease/oil/filter. Once installed you had to check the aim and adjust them so they were facing straight ahead. Major PIA.

Alot of newer ones just pop in, and turn, no tools needed.
Some the whole assembly with all the lights pops out with clips, again, no tools needed. |

Well the new ones are brighter for sure.
But my entire bumper has to be removed to get a new one in. That's dumb engineering.

uh, no.
my '74 dodge dart headlights were a major PITA to replace. 3 tiny rusty screws, and you had to sequentially tighten them in order to aim the headlight. Big ass sealed beam, hard to keep a spare in the trunk without fear of it breaking. If the light blew in winter, it was a double PITA. The bottom screw usually had to have you lying flat on your back in order to work on it. Fast? Not a chance in hell of doing it fast. my '99 subaru? Open the hood, unpop a clip, twist and remove the bulb element, put the new one in, pop the clip back on. Sometimes the clip didn't want to cooperate so it might take a few minutes, after all, it was usually dark when you had to work on it. That said, I once did the change, hood up to hood down, in 3 minutes. And I kept a spare in my glove compartment. I have heard that some of the newer GMC models require removing the tire, inner wheel well and other parts to access the headlight assembly. Very poor engineering decision, all the people responsible for that should be fired and blacklisted from ever working in anything remotely connected to the industry again.

Not in the eyes of the service manager that gets to charge you all that labor!

I think he may be referring to things like this GM marvel:
Feel free to watch all 4 videos showing how the riveted in inner fender needs to be removed in order to change the headlight. Worst. Engineering. Ever.

My Wife has an Acadia. I've lived through this misery. Whomever invented this 'method' for lamp replacement needs to be fired. Today.
