Rosemary's Baby - the movie

So my wife and I watched the old film Rosemary's Baby last night. I had never seen the movie all the way through and unedited. What a freaky movie! And all the weird coincidences and connections with the Manson murders and John Lennon. Definitely worth the watch if you are into classic horror movies.

I think its a really good movie. Such a classic 60s vibe to it. That dont make movies like that anymore. I watched it again not very long ago and I was surprised that it held up pretty good. Still a freaky movie to watch.

Yes, it has held up very well. Still an engrossing portrayal of a nightmare.

Yep. In one scene there is a dead woman laying in a pool of blood in front of the same gate where John Lennon was shot years later.

It is a truly great horror film. I love the sense of dread that permeates the atmosphere. Creepy.

Pretty sure that movie also doomed Mia Farrow's marriage to Frank Sinatra, and that it's subsequent success against a Sinatra release took on a sort of revenge for Farrow. At least, that's what producer Robert Evans claims.

It is a Classic. Then The Exorcist came along. The bar was raised IMHO. Rosemary's Baby was a little disturbing. The Exorcist was over the top at the time but I think Rosemary's Baby started the trip into that genre. At least it did for me.

Both classics, no doubt! I think Rosemary's Baby is more tasteful, whereas The Exorcist goes all out. The Exorcist flat out scared me more, but Rosemary's Baby has that feeling of unease that I'm not sure I've had another movie match. I watch them both every couple years or so, The Exorcist didn't keep it's scare factor on repeat viewings, but the uneasiness lingers with Rosemary's Baby. Usually I'd probably just say The Exorcist is my favorite of the two, but right now, thinking about it, I think I'll call it a draw.

Those two bring up another classic to my mind, The Omen. It didn't give me the scare The Exorcist did but it might be the closest to Rosemary's Baby for giving me that just general feeling of unease.

The Omen is a great movie as well. Even the sequels are OK. I like the Exorcist a lot too but the shock value wears off. I have to say though, to this day it is the scariest movie Ive seen. That being said, I saw it at a young age, but the whole demonic possession thing was so scary I had trouble sleeping for like a month after that movie. I think all 3 are really good horror movies.

The Omen is a joke compared to The Haunting. That's a real horror movie.

Rosemary's baby is great.

My son looks eerily similar to Damien, and we almost named him Damien. I guess its more apparent in person, people mention it pretty quickly upon meeting him.

Fantastic film. Properly scary in the right way - using drama, suspense & great characters, not cheap gimmicks & gratuitous violence. This is why it has stood the test of time. IMO it was Roman Polanski's finest hour.
And Mia Farrow is just absolutely *stunning*.

I must admit, when I saw the thread title for a moment I thought there must have been a recent Hollywood remake (no doubt starring Nicolas Cage) and my heart sank.
I know I sound like a right old fart, but why can't they make films like these nowadays? Is it just that "typical" audiences have no attention span & need stuff to be blowing up every 5 minutes?

My recommendation for a film in similar vein to check out is The Wicker Man (the original, not the biblically awful Cage remake).
It looks a little dated these days for sure, but is scary in the way Rosemary's Baby is scary. All atmosphere.
There are also some wonderful acting performances (notably Edward Woodward) there's hardcore snail-sex action, and Britt Ekland gets her kit off & dances about naked.
What's not to like amongst that lot!
Tends to be a marmite film, people either love it or hate it. It's stuck with me though, ever since the first time I saw it when I was a kid & it scared the pants off me.
Christopher Lee also rates it the best film he ever worked on. If you liked Rosemary's Baby, you should check it out! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070917/
