I dunno, I don't think it needs anything profane in it to be soul. Gospel music is the original soul music in every way. Soul music, as we think of it as a musical genre, is just secularized gospel, formally it's pretty much indentical. Yeah, secular soul gets a lot of its zing and tension from that potent mixture of the secular and the profane, but gospel, and religious ecstasy also has a kind of physical, maybe even sexual energy of it's own.

Soul to me is about surrender to the spirit, the holy spirit really, but if it's some kind of spirit of love, that works too, I'm not sure it's so much something you pull from yourself as it is something you summon and gather and channel.

Whew. Thanks for hipping me to this singer. I hadn't heard that song (or Donny Hathaway) for a long time. Gave me chills, and brought back memories.

Great thread, by the way.

Billy Graham the evangelist? Just making sure it is not about Santana meeting Bill Graham, the legendary SF concert promoter who was also a significant actor in Santana's career for a number of years, as well as his personal friend.

Marvin was the ultimate soul singer.

When Steve Swallow commissioned Ken Parker to build him a bass many years ago, Ken asked him, "What sound are you looking for?" Steve's answer was, "Marvin Gaye."

Now I'm confused. I've never heard the evangelist referred to as Bill Graham, and I know that Carlos Santana was close friends with Bill Graham, the concert promoter from SF. Just making sure that the reference is to the former, rather than the latter, as I have not seen the issue to which your anecdote refers. I do not associate the concert promoter with spirituality is all.

Regardless of the genre, it means, "from the heart & soul."

To me, it's James Brown, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, The Band, Hank Williams, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Paul Rodgers, Muddy Waters, Steve Marriott, Waylon Jennings, Curtis Mayfield, Chambers Brothers, Staple Singers, and many more.

Glad to see you're up to your usual A-*o*e tricks. The point of the column really had less to do with either Graham than the subject of this thread which is soul. I thought that Neer and I had read the same column but when he didn't recognize my reference I described the context of my previous post. You sir are the one making an ass of yourself trying to prove how smart you are.

I am genuinely sorry if my post rankled you. It seems that your writing style and my writing style are incompatible to the other in some way, as we seem to be mis-communicating on the board.

I am not trying to prove I'm smart. Ever. I'm honestly just trying to make sure who it is you are talking about. I associate Santana with the promoter, as I'm pretty sure they were close friends. I was just trying to make sure that this wasn't about a meeting between the evangelist and Santana, since the notion of spirituality was invoked. I am not precluding the possibility of Bill Graham the promoter being involved in a conversation on spirituality, I just do not associate him with the subject.

I don't think either of us is making an ass of himself here, although I would point out that you now at least twice have resorted to what amounts to name calling on this forum by editing my username in a fashion that suggests a particular epithet that is associated with the ass.

". . .there are no maps nor disciplines to help us find the duende. We only know that he burns the blood like a poultice of broken glass, that he exhausts, that he rejects all the sweet geometry we have learned. . . ."
