Need advice on power supply!

Hey guys, as you can see in my signature i have a few pedals, and currently im powering with a onespot and wall wart for the TF. Its getting a little noisy and I would like to invest in a quieter more efficient type of power supply.

Im currently looking at a pp2 or a cioks dc8 or 10. I have a pt-1 and I would like to mount the power underneath. I plan on putting a few more pedals in my chain by the end of this summer so It needs to have probably 8 outputs at least. (basically, I want room to grow with the power supply)

Any advice or recommendations, especially from guys who have similar setups, would be appreciated.

Well in terms of efficiency, nothing will be a switch-mode power supply like the One Spot for generating maximum current in a small, inexpensive unit with the least amount of loss via heat. It's the most efficient solution.

But in my experience switch mode power supplies generate a lot of noise of thier own; they have substantial EMF radiation fields that also induce noise in stuff around them; and, because you daisy chain with something like a One Spot you can have pedals passing noise down the line to other pedals and you can have ground loops. I think that while they're highly efficient they're not a good choice for use in an audio signal chain.

Either of the Cioks units you mentioned or the PP2+ are better solutions in my book -- linear power supplies, toroidal transformers for smaller EMF radiation fields, isolated grounds (8 isolated grounds on the PP2+ and DC10; 6 isolated grounds on the DC8).

I don't know about the current needs or the voltage capabilties of your pedals but if you have pedals that need high current the DC10 has 2 400-mA taps, the DC10 also has extra shielding around the xformer for even lower induced noise. It's more expensive though than the PP2+ or the DC6. Check your pedal specs to see how much current each of them draws.

With your current board, you can easily power it via the VL ISO-5. Power the Empress compressor thru the 18V tap, Eventide thru the high mA 9V tap and the rest thru the 9V-100mA taps. $109

If you want to step up, the Cioks DC8 has more powering options than the PP2+ for the same price $169/170. the biggest difference between the two is the higher mA in the Cioks and the accessory outlet in the PP2+.

I plan on getting a couple more pedals by the end of summer, ideally a tim, hoof (replacing a big muff), and some type of trem, possibly a reverb (<--maybe a flint) so that would leave me with 2 more 9v dc pedals (i think) that I would need to power. would the DC8 or pp2+ be enough?

One thing to consider is that you'll need to modify your PT1 to make either of the Cioks PSUs to fit. I prefer Cioks and use a DC10 and AC10 for my board, but if you don't have the necessary tools, a Voodoo Labs PP2+ would probably be a better option.

The Cioks DC10 is so good that I would rebuild a pedalboard around it.

You should go with the cioks. The TF as I recall will need 390 somewhat of mA which the pp2+ will only give you by using the high current outputs (5 and 6) in parallel. The flint will also need at least 250ma (because that's what the digital strymon pedals need). The DC10 has 2 400mA outs so it would cover that.

Another vote for the Cioks DC10 here (I have one and its been great for me). It's a bit more expensive, but it will give you some breathing room if you add a few more pedals in the future. It's dead quiet and rock solid - a great product overall.

Cioks DC10 without a doubt.

The DC8 could power your board, but you would need to order or build some "Y" power cables. They do sell a 3 effect daisy chain now, you could order the Cioks and Cioks power cables thru: Pedalshark.com. I have powered up to 14 effects thru the DC8.

If you are not keen on building or ordering power cables, the DC10 could certainly be sufficient enough as well to power your board. The Timefactor could be powered via a 300mA tap. I have successfully powered 2 Eventides via the CAE MC-403 Power Unit using the variable voltage taps w/ no doubler type cables.
