Wait a sec, a Bluesbreaker IS a JTM45 in combo package. And yes, they are only 35w, they really sound good as a semi-clean platform.

That said, if Marshall is your wheelhouse, the 20w is a killer sounding amp as is the 18w (the 20 is a little more rock, the 18 more blues) both just kill thru a Blue or even a Greenback.

I really couldn't reccomend the Bluesbreaker highly enough for this purpose. As well as having the most stunning clean and driven tones, it also excells at the 'Just breaking-up' magic zone that fuzz's love so much. Plus, being relatively flat in the EQ makes it superb for any kind of dirt. The Vox on the other hand, is more finiky with od's and fuzz's. They are a little more mid-forward, and already lighter in the bass, which a Tonebender may or may not cut some more. Same reason why some people dont like tubescareamers with Vox's, but YMMV. Also great for the same reasons are the 'Bass-Spec' Plexi Marshalls and especially Hiwatt's. I love my tonebenders thru a Blackface too, but sometimes they may need to be boosted or driven by another OD into a scooped-clean amp - depending on taste. Both the Bluesbreaker and the 1974X (18 Watt) re-issues by Marshall are great amps, especially if you look for used. Try out some of the bigger Oranges as well to see if they float your boat.

I believe Beck used a Vox AC30 on Truth, along with his Supa Fuzz. Both Page and Beck used Vox/MKII combos during The Yardbirds i believe.
I've used MKIIs with a Bluesbreaker and with a Trace Elliott Velocette. Sounded grest with both. The Velocette was a Vox inspired 15 watt dual EL84 amp with a Vintage 10 speaker. Key was to not use the bright switch.

Other than when he played with Dave Grohl after the FF show in Wembley. JP's backline was pure Orange for that show, probably has been for at least a few years.

He's been using AD-30 amps since at least 2000, when he toured with The Black Crowes. He also used AD-30s for the '02 reunion and the most recent reunion shows along with a variety of other amps. His original MKII died some time in the 90s during the recording of Walking Back to Clarksdale. His old MKII hadn't made a live appearance since '70 I believe. All his recent live performances from the Crowes on is pure amp drive.

i play my aggressively tuned mkII through a matchless spitfire and it sounds pretty great but it is lacking a little bit in the bass department. playing through a completely clean Engl screamer with v30's it is amazing though. The engl is bassy and a little scooped to it kind of evens out the tonebender frequencies and the fact that it is clean means you don't get too muddied up with gain.

I have an old Maestro and a Divided By 13 (both in my sig), my Tonebenders sound great through both. I use D*A*M Tonebenders and/or a Basic Audio Scarab Deluxe.

Macaris are still manufacturing them.

Not cheap but.... MUCH better than any of the clones I've tried.

I played thru a mid 90s jtm45 reissue 2x12 combo with my skinpimp and it did not sound good. It honestly sounded loads better thru a fender super sonic on the bassman setting. Was it likely the jtm i played thru?

That's pretty strange. My first nice amp was a 90s Bluesbreaker RI and it was one of the best amps I've used with fuzz. The Bluesbreaker/JTM45 circuit is closely related to the Bassman btw...

So was it likely to be his amp? He said he had 6L6 power tubes in there and it was pretty beat up. I don't know, but I do know that fender super sonic sounded better than HIS jtm45
