How To Get Rid of A Car With Issues?
So after 4 years of good times with my 2007 Mini Cooper the transmission is going. Apparently quite common with the Mini's as I'm now finding out.
Car is out of warranty, and I've been quoted $8000 to replace the transmission!!!! I still owe about $7000 on this car. Any suggestions of what I can do?

i'm sure you can get a tranny, no, not THAT kind of tranny
, from a junk yard for thousands less than that. do that and then sell it if you must, or keep it. Getting a new tranny from the dealer is crazy talk.

I have a few suggestions............but I'm pretty sure it would fly in the face of Forum Rules, in addition to Local, State & Federal Laws depending on which one you'd try............LOL
That really, really sucks. Good luck.

Yup don't go to the dealer. Get on the net find a used one. Then have your trusted local dude do it.

The dealer is going to replace it to like new specs. New OEM parts and xmsn, warrantied labor and parts, etc. Their mechanics are specially trained for the vehicle, and the best there is. They're gonna be the most expensive. If it were a new or in-warranty vehicle, I'd say that would be the route to go. Being that it is an older vehicle that is out of warranty, you would be better off going with a used - or better yet, a remanufactured xmsn and a local mechanic would most likely have better rates.

A used transmission is a great idea but I live in an area that doesn't really have a place what works on Mini's that's NOT a BMW dealership. Just called my usual trusted 'local dude' and he said he's not able to do that kind of work on a Mini. Grrrrrr

no way a tranny is going to run $8 large
id bet any local mom and pop shop can do it for $2500 or so.

you can try to sell it "AS IS" but its in your best interest to be forthcoming on any problems, otherwise you can find yourself in legal trouble,

Not yet. The car isn't changing gears and there's a symbol lit up saying there's an engine malfunction. My usual local repair guy says he can't work on it and the local BMW dealership estimated that if the transmission needed to be replaced it'd be around $8000. There isn't a Mini dealership here. I've just called around and this is all the info I have right now. I'm basically trying to find someone to diagnose the issue first without taking it to a BMW dealership. I did a lot of reading online(I know I know) and there are numerous complaints about the Mini transmissions and the cost of repair from Mini/BMW dealerships.
