Delay advice required please
Hi all,
I am in the market for an analogue delay pedal. I'm looking at the EHX Deluxe Memory Man, the Maxon AD999, the MXR Carbon copy and the (digital) Strymon Brigadier. I play ambient, shoegaze sort of stuff. I'm not too bothered about presets etc, just a good dark (syrupy, if you know what I mean?) echo. So anyone with experience of these pedals please chime in! Ta! |

I just added the carbon copy to my rig & I think it sounds great, very rich & organic sounding. I'm not familiar with the others though.

Carbon Copy would be the cheapest of those i believe
Brigadier is the most tweakable (the El Capistan may be worth looking into also) EHX (old big box ones) seem to have the most mojo it's really kindof a pick you poison situation (for lack of a better term)... but if i was in your shoe(gaze)s, i'd go Carbon Copy- it's got a similar sound to the EHX DMM and can be found used for a 1/3 of the Strymon stuff |

Carbon Copy, but try before you buy. I tried buying a used one before and it was DOA when I got it home and put it into my rig. I've since read of similar problems occurring from time to time with this particular pedal. Probably the same with any used pedal, but just be aware of known issues happening in this regard.
Assuming you do get one that works, I'd say Carbon Copy is certainly your best bet economically speaking. |

I suggest the Ibanez AD9 for your short delays and main tone... Its very dark and dirty. Also the Line 6 Echo Park for the longer tape delays... Its nice and gritty which just a little more clarity which is good for a different tone. Its tap tempo as well... Both can be bought used VERY CHEAP right now.. I believe less then any of those pedals you mentioned
Check out this thread by "DemoColorScheme" ..He's pretty awesome in ambient type music and uses real space echos but swears by the Echo Park. http://www.thegearpage.net/board/sho...ight=echo+park |

+1 for carbon copy, great sound for cheap, never had a problem with mine.
Also it's not analog, but take a hard look at the TC Flashback, very versatile delay, and pretty good sounding too.

Dont know how much your looking to spend, but the most tweakable one out there IMHO is the Memory Lane 2, but its kinds pricey. out of what you named the DMM is definately the best sounding, but not as tweakable as the others.

I'm a fan of the Carbon Copy as well, but I'm a bigger fan of the Malekko Ekko 616 Analog Delay. The Ekko 616 has the option for buffered bypass or true bypass as well as onboard modulation control without having to mess with trimpots inside. It's also priced the same as the Carbon Copy.

Yes. Way more versatile modulation on the 616 than the Carbon Copy.

Yes, it can get pretty intense. I tend to decrease the depth to make it more manageable.

Wow, thanks for all the responses.. I think I'll try and check out the carbon copy in the flesh. I've never seen a 616 over here in the UK but they sound interesting.
Anyone have the Maxon AD999? |

+1 on the malekko 616 over the Carbon Copy. I had 2 Carbon Copys sometime back and while they sounded great I couldn't get them to play nice with some of my other delays. There would be a volume increase sometimes when I would engage the pedal. It was annoying if I wasn't using it for a solo. Plus you can tweak the modulation on the fly with the malekko.
That being said the big box Deluxe Memory Man's are to die for. I REALLY regret getting rid of mine. It just has that something that you can't quite put your finger on when it's there and you absolutely miss when its gone. The milliseconds are a bit limited but its a fantastic unit none the less Strymon Brigadier is Great as well and would probably be what I would go with in the end. It can cop DMM tones for sure and the quality of the repeats and tone is just great in my opinion. More available milliseconds than the big box DMM's as well. It's twice the price of the 616 but, well worth it
