Anyone doing dual-stage Tone Matching?

Has anyone tried a dual-stage Tone Matching experiment with a real amp (and axe-fx II)?

I saw a mention of making a tone match IR of the amp at very low gain settings to try to get the "pre-gain" EQ like the Kemper profiling process does, then take another at normal gain settings for post-amp finishing.

I don't have an amp to try it on and I don't think I've seen a comparison of the results yet.

Its not going to be an exact replica of the Kemper profiling process, but it might be another tool in the box for axe-fx II users.
