Musical Box show at DC's renovated Howard Theater
Just saw Musical Box, the premier Genesis (Peter Gabriel era only) tribute band at the newly renovated Howard Theater in DC, and it was amazing. First off, for any DC folks, you really should check out the Howard Theater...it's a historical site where Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye and The Supremes all played, but it sat abandoned for 32-years until a many million dollar renovation which turned it into an amazing dinner-theater type venue.
Musical Box was phenomenal...I'd never seen them before, but I love early Genesis. They played Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in its entirety, flawlessly. The transitions were seamless, every part was played as per the record (even presumably vintage guitar effects or great simulators) and the costumes and visuals were really cool (and apparently either actual Genesis props or exact, authorized replicas). Their Phil Collins/drummer is amazing, and their Peter Gabriel could pass for him with your eyes closed. Super cool. They played an encore of Musical Box and Watcher of the Skies. I strongly recommend any Genesis fans to see this show...it was really special. |

Huge fan of Gabriel-era Genesis also. The Musical Box is generally accepted as the premier Genesis tribute band in existence. Those guys are passionate (fanatical?) about presenting a very accurate musical and theatrical performance of the material.
IIRC, believe Hackett, Gabriel and maybe even Collins have joined them on stage over the years to perform a number.

Not only are the props the same ones used by Genesis in the 70s, but the background slide pictures shown during the concert were the same slides used on the Lamb Lies Down tour.
I saw the Musical Box in November and I agree with everything you said. These guys are the best tribute act on Earth right now. |

I wish I could find out about the gear these guys use...I know a lot of it is vintage, but I don't know what they play. They must have lots of synth-type gear. It looks like the Mike Rutherford had at least one Boss pedal, but I couldn't see anything else. Anyone know anything?

When they do Phil era stuff the singer and drummer wear the same outfits, and switch off backstage.

I saw Musical Box last year in a small (400 seat) theatre here in So. Cal! Great experience for those of us who missed Genesis in the golden era!
Here are some links; http://www.Calprog.com/ (look under "past events") This is where I saw them. Check out the wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Musical_Box_(band) and their site: http://themusicalbox.net/ |
