Ed Roman claims MAX is still alive making guitars

So the story starts when I decided to call roman about getting an axe made, I am serious about getting an axe made but just not by Roman. I basically wanted to see how much bulls*** he woudl throw my way. Sure enough Roman always comes through. I started asking him questions about his guitars etc. I told him I wanted him to make me a Les Paul sounding guitar. He told me that If i wanted a les paul his great buddy MAX would make me one. So of course im sitting there laughing to myself, MAX isnt still alive roman is full of it. He then claims that MAX was in his car just last week and they were talking about guitars. I am left speechless, I tell him that I thought MAX was dead and he assures me that he isnt and they are great friends...likely story... Roman also told me that he coudl sell me a heatley for 1200 bucks. Sounds like a sweet deal to me ... :NUTS

If you're sure Max is dead, could Ed be channeling? By the way-I, too, am wondering who is Max?

I was there too. He also mentioned he recently made someone a 4 lb, completely hollow, les paul '59 replica that looks, sounds, and feels the exact same as an original. He said he used all titanium parts, and had 1 real humbucker, with one being a fake (WTF???)

He also backed himself into a corner by saying its not illegal to make guitars that infringe on others' copyrights, on to "offer" these guitar-copies to the public.

What a man, what a man. If not a good luthier/business man, at least he's entertaining.

I was under the impression that MAX was dead, but I might have been wrong. I know that he hasnt been making guitars if he still is alive. To all of those who dont know who MAX is he is/was a luthier that made gibson repros. He made quite a few of Slash's guitars and other gibson replicas. His guitars were said to be soo good that they coudl pass for a real 59 LP.

I think he's the one that made Slashes original LP Clone used on destruction............Supposed to be the next best thing to a real 59. Except of course for my DB Red Top of course..........

Arrow

Someone at Rudy's on 48th once told me that Max's pieces were so close to the original cause he actually worked in the Gibson factory in the 50s and had hands on knowledge/experience...all I know is that the 2 Max LPs if had the pleasure of holding (neither were for sale) had a feel & tone beyond what Gibson is offering.

I too also heard he was dead, but if he isn't he'd be WAY too dang old to be working at this point

As my handle might give away, Peter "Max" Baranet made me 2 Korina Vee's - one in '84 and one in the mid 90's. A couple years ago, a friend of mine said he ran into him at a guitar show. He started a webpage offering info on his Lester replicas, but it was never finished. Here's a link to the most recent info I've found. I'd love to here what Pete's up to.

You are thinking of Chris Derrig. He's the one that made the Slash guitar. He's the dead LP clone builder. Max is the live one. Max often gets credit for the Slash guitar, especially when someone is trying to use it to help sell their Max LP.

Max is very much alive. About a year ago I emailed him after finding a walnut colored all mahoghany Les Paul Max at Cowtown Guitars. I emailed to confirm that it was really made by Max. He emailed back and remembered the guitar very well. I think Cowtown may still have the guitar. It was the color of those 70's ES-355's in walnut brown. I did not buy the guitar as it was around 6K. Chris Derrig is one of two makers of those early Slash pre-Appetite era guitars and he died. I believe that Slash still has the Max and the Derrig.

I saw Mr. Roman at NAMM and he was being escorted by hired bodyguards. Two of them. Draw your own conclusions why a guitar dealer needs head breakers.
