Chicago Iron: How strong an Octavia...other?

Want to get an octavia clone and was wondering if anyone has used the Chicago Iron box? Looking for a REALLY good, classic Hendrix upper octave not a fuzz ocatve as such (HBE UFO etc)

Candidates:
  1. Voodoolab Proctavia
  2. Chicago Iron
  3. Retroman Octavious
  4. KR Doubler (had sold?)
  5. Fulltone FuzzOctave
  6. Fulltone Ultimate Octave
  7. Zvex Octane III (had sold?)
  8. Zvex Johnny Octave
  9. FoxRox Octron (NOT really the classic sound, right?)
  10. Roger Mayer Octavia (Don't dig the big spaceship thing)
  11. MJM Roctavious
  12. Addrock Electric Smile (BIG box!)
  13. Pedalworx Octabooty (had sold)
  14. Other...suggest!
Thanks!!!

I like my Doubler a lot... I don't know if that one is still in your running, but I think it sounds awesome in my setup.

The Chicago Iron is the best I have tried/owned, but it is a octave fuzz, as are most on your list. The new version has a seperate footswitch for the fuzz and octave though I haven't tried it.
I ended up selling mine to devil-tone cause I just wasn't using it enough and needed some cash. I would definitely buy another if I wanted an octave fuzz though.

The closest sounding (but not looking) clone t0 my original Tycobrahe Octavia was the Justin Philpot. There's one on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Tych-Octave-II-b...QQcmdZViewItem

Have you played with the Chicago Iron?
I just got a new one last week. The SE.
It definately needs to be tamed. It not a boys octave.

The Karl is cool, more of a fuzz/distortion, but with a subtle octave sound. I really dig mine. There is more body to the notes, less of that harsh high end. Tracks well too.

I love my MJM Roctavios, but it's a fuzz octavia as well.

I thought that the unit Hendrix used would be considered a fuzz octave effect...

Let me clarify...I was mostly talking about the HBE style which really was more like a Big Muff with and octave. I believe that it is difficult to get he octave thing without some fuzz in there (not sure) but I am looking for a good "ring mod-ish" upper ocatve that can get that odd harminc thing without a lot of fuzz around it. Some seem to need a lot of fuzz to get working on the octave.

Anyone try the PE Clean Octave Blend, Face Lift or Experience?

When it comes to analog octave up, you really need to consider how it sounds with the rest of your pedal chain, and how it sounds through your amp at high volumes.

If you sit with a vintage Tycobrahe (or faithfull clone) at bedroom volume, you'll notice that the upper octave isn't as up-front as one would imagine. But at gigging level it sounds great.

Octron is a little different, I fined tuned it to jive well with the clean signal and the octave down signal. But it still does a great Hendrix type of sound.

Check out this clip - it's Frank Marino playing through his Octron during a gig. I recorded it from the audience. When he was doing the high octave part of the solo (starting at 1:15) it was one of those glorious moments we all dream of..

Well, I have had a few, the ones that stand out are the Captain Coconut. I now use the Experience. Nails Henrdix. Thing is, the fuzz alone is ok, not what I'd liek in a straight fuzz, but usable. With the octave kicked in it screams Hendrix. The reverse option makes it even cooler.
I do know Pedalworx used ot make one thta is supposed to kick booty.

I have an Astronimus by Dice Works and it's very good. It's based on the original Octavia and is 18 volts. Here's one:
