Fender amps with pedals?

Anyone here have experience using distortion pedals with Fender amps. I'm looking to get either the 65 reverb reissue or one of the hot rod models. For distortion I'm going to pick up a EH metal muff. I'm not necessarily looking to get heavy metal tone, just some good thick hard rock, plus this pedal is great with low gain applications. Since I can't audition this set up prior to purchase I was hoping to get some input from the tone gurus here. By the way I'll be using a US Fender Strat with fat 50's and a Warmoth Koa Vip with Carvin pickups.
Thanks for any input

Probably most cats around here have gone this route at some time. It works fine. Have fun.

I can't say about the DRRI but I used to run a Russian Big Muff through my old Hot Rod Deluxe and it sounded fine. I just hated the overdrive in that amp. Currently I run pedals through an old Twin Reverb (a bit of a different monster) and it LOVES pedals. Hope this helps.

I use a BBE Crusher with my Strat through a silverface Fender Champ when I don't feel like firing up the 100 watter. That little Champ sounds huge and heavy with the distortion pedal. I think you'll get what you're looking for.

'65 Super or '65 Deluxe? have both and use overdrive, not distortion, through mine. Both sound great...I use a Sparkle Drive.

I saw a video clip on Youtube of a TGPer that coupled a Tonebone Classic with a HRDx with excellent results. Made me want to get one.

Fender amps are great. My fave is the twin reverb. However, the pedal pursuit hits your GAS nerves hard. I stick with amps that get it all done in channels. Maybe some day, I'll go this route, but not this day. Fender amps are famous for taking pedals well. You can get monster hellacious tones out of a good twin reverb and a decent distortion box.

Definately audition any fuzz pedal with "GERMANIUM" transistors with your amp, since I have had some bad experiences w/ Fuzz>Fenders.
Muffs should work great!

It really depends on your playing style,
I can tell you that Fender amps just dont and wont work for me.

Ive played most models with the intention to but but was never happy with them, they dont sound good to me with drive pedlas
Dont get me wrong, I do love Fender amps and people with the right playing style are very happy with them and sond great

I much prefer the Marshall/bassman type circuit
be careful before you decide to buy, you may just purchase the wrong amplifier for you and no pedal will make you happy.
I urge you to think about your playing style, and what youre trying to achieve from an amplifier before you buy.

Just some friendly advice.

Thanks for the input guys. I just picked up a Hot Rod Deville 2x12 and a EH Metal Muff tonight. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Is it typically better to run distortion pedals though the FX loop or just straight into the input?

I played a gig the other night with just a '66 Vibrolux and an OCD pedal, sounded really good!

I believe it's "customary" to run distortion through the front of the amp and not the effects loop but try it both ways and see what you like. I never put distortion through the loop, but that's just me.

If you don't like the Metal Muff, I'd check out a Crunchbox or a Tube Zone from MI Audio.
