Why do ALL "Boutique" amps do BETTER Fender sound?
It seems that there is always a new thread about the latest, greatest, amp to
get the "FENDER TONE". It's always about an amp the does the Fender tone BETTER. Whether it's Tweed of Blackface, these amps ALWAYS out perform the older Vintage Fenders in EVERY aspect. I've read over and over that these Custom amps have sweeter highs, smoother mids, tighter lows, and smoother reverb. These amps take the Fender tone WAY beyond ANY Fender could even dream of. I've always thought to myself that all these amps are NOT better than an older Tweed or BF amps cause their tone is so much removed from what they're trying to emulate . You can't say that these amps have that Tweed or BF tone down to a T but better. These amps all have their OWN tone signature that makes them unique in their own right. If you are after the Vintage Tweed or BF Fender tone, then you seek out THAT tone. Classic Fender tone is what it is . All other clones are just their OWN special version of that tone. NOT BETTER, just DIFFERENT. |

They don't that is people trying to justify the ridiculous prices they have paid for amps.

Good point, Tex. I always have a good laugh when someone asks for suggestions for a vintage fender type amp and forumites respond with everything but an actual fender amp. WTF? "Hey, if it costs more it must be better."
Whatever. It's their money -- but you're right, it's a pretty silly phenomenon. |

The only "boutique" I have found to out tone even a fender HR Deville is the Bruno Cowtippers. The better new Fenders and the better vintage ones are still what I judge other amps by. They are just THAT good! :AOK |

I think you're right, different is not better. But with that said, I've modified stock Fender amps with slight changes that make the amp fit my needs better, so to me it's better. But for someone else it may be worse. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I don't know. Is this a trick question?

I think it's because nobody wants to have the post that reads:
I bought (flavor of the month) and is DOESN"T sound as good as a Fender

...I'm thinking the new FMIC slogan ought to be: "...it's the REAL thing!"
...and, we could "toast" its nationwide launch with an appropriate nationally-known COLA! ...notice how both use color red predominately in their marketing?

I'll never sell my vintage Fender amps. And I guess since they have now RI'd the Blues Deville line, my original 4x10 Tweed Blues DeVille is now collectible LOL So, with a Blues DeVille 4x10, a 64 Bassman, a 66 Princeton and a 67 Bassman, I don't need any boutique amps, do I?

It's because no one can speak of any amp without at least some...bias.

Well Fender's are kind of THE standard, so I suppose if your going to compare your amp to something it must be either a Fender or Marshall. If I we're to characterize their tone it would be clean transitioning into gradual breakup with 6L6 or 6V6 tubes, add reverb and trem and you've got it.

Well, for me, I wouldn't say my tweed 5E3 clone sounds better than an original Fender, but it was a hell of a lot cheaper and it is new so it doesn't need the attention an old Fender needs (caps, new power cord, etc.).

It is also interesting to note the sheer number of booteek amps vs normal fenders (or even marshalls) in the amp and cab emporium...though it could just be that TGPers buy more booteek amps than plain fenders and marshalls...or it could mean...
