Jazz Book Alert
Bert Ligon's "Connecting Chords With Linear Harmony" is a fascinating book. Ligon isolates 3 common outlines used in the jazz universe and systematically shows how jazz's elite players have utilized these outlines. Ligon presents hundreds of examples ranging from the most simple to progressively more complicated ornamentation of the outlines. Take it from someone who buys many, many books and sadly tosses most of them quickly, this book is compelling and instantly gratifying. Could be a terrific text for instructors!

Thanks for the heads up, I've seen that one and wondered if it was good. Could you clarify what you mean by "3 common outlines"?

The three outlines are "lines" that you are quite familiar with that punctuate 3rds leading to 3rds, 7ths leading to 3rds, etc. Then modified with chromatics, octave displacement etc. Material which I'm certain you have seen many times, but the organization and sheer number of examples highlight this book. Not often you see (or hear) a minor 7th line starting on the b9? I love books but they better give up the goods fast or else bottom of the pile they go.

Bert's got quite a bit of stuff online that's very useful for Jazz playing.
Here's his transcriptions. Dead on stuff too. http://www.music.sc.edu/ea/Jazz/transcriptions.html

Recieved the book a few days ago and am well into playing the examples of Outline 1. This really is a great book if you are interested in learning to play through changes.

THE ADVANCING GUITARIST by Mick Goodrick as I've said before as well as many others. I also think Frank Gambale gets right to the point and is really into simplifying hard stuff. An Improvisors O.S.(operating System) by Wayne Krantz is a book unlike any other. Although others talk of similar stuff, Wayne has put it together in the most compelling of ways. Mind boggling. But probobly the books that I read the most are the books with transcribed guitar. I love my Joe Pass solos and I love my Peter Green solo and my Lenny Breau transcriptions And the music I've transcribed, Robben Ford, Steve Kimock, Amos Garrett plus.... Things I would never have without transcribing. And Lately, most my learning is happening here at TGP You guys open a whole new world. ----however I seem to be playing less while I'm on line. I think I'm becoming a potato of sorts. |
