School me on neck shapes.
I currently have two guitars (well…3, but one is my POS Cruise beginner axe and is anything but playable), an Ibanez RG470 (Korean made), and an Epi-Les Paul Standard that is about 4 years old. The Ibanez's neck feels a little wide to me, and too thin. I like the neck and feel of my Epi much more because is seems slightly thicker than on the Ibanez, and narrower, making it easier for me to play.
Can anyone tell me which Fender Stratocaster neck shape will be the closest to my Epi? C-shape? V-shape? ??? I am considering a MIM Strat, so how do I know which neck shape I am getting? More specifically, I am considering a used MIM at a pawn shop whos serial number (M215143) indicates it was made in the early 90's. Trouble is, the guitar is in such dire need of a makeover, I doubt I could get a good idea if I like it or not from attempting to play it there....the strings are rusted...it is even strung incorrectly (strings in the wrong locations). Thanks |

Here's a great page on Warmoth neck shapes just to give you an idea -
http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/necks/...=back_profiles Hope this helps. |

You need to communicate what the shape (profile) is of the Epiphone first. I've never played one and my telepathic powers aren't what they were

...just two neck types: (A) those you LIKE and (B) those you DON'T LIKE. (tongue-in-cheek!)

I believe the MIM Strats shape is just slightly thinner than a medium C. I've got a gold Splatter buried in its case somewhere around the house and if memory serves me, it's neck was a bit thinner than the Lonestar my friend always brings over. The 60's reissue (street price $600?) Fender was selling a year or two ago was probably most like the Epi you like. It had more of a Les Paul grab to it than anything else I've held from Fender lately, though I'm sure they have some offerings that go beyond medium C, perhaps the John Mayer for example? Warmoth is a good place to start to get an idea of neck contours.

SeaFarer is right, the 60's reissue is the closest one to the size and shape you are looking for. I have owned both an Epi LP and a 60's reissue Strat.

I have 2 MIJ 62 RI Strats with baseball bat necks that are not too different than my LP Standard with 50s neck. I have not seen a USA or MIM Fender neck as fat as these 2 are. The MIM 60s might be as close as I've seen. Best to just see if you can find a bunch of RI Fenders and try them, I guess.

I agree with SeaFarer & Nick Patterson - if you're looking for a MIM Fender Strat, the 60s C might be a good option. They're nice guitars, too.
I actually find I'm starting to like both thinner and thicker neck shapes - depending on what I'm playing, either one can feel right. |

OK...thatnks for the info. I'll keep in mind that I need a C shape...or 60's reissue C shape if possible.
