Supreme Fuzzamba: Studio Mumblings & Loose Rumblings Rough Mix...

i went into a cool analog studio the other day and did some off-the-cuff one-take soloing spewage on a few tracks for this dude's loopy/ambient/nutty album he's putting out. i haven't ever met the guy, but i got a few keynotes thrown at me by the engineer/producer such as terje rypdal-ish, 70's miles, oldschool beck vs weather report, ecm meets cactus, etc...

this is a rough mix from one the "tunes", with the whole pre-edited guitar take(where i was churning from start to finish).....

http://www.johnzguitar.com/supremefuzzamba.mp3

i thought the overall sound came out kinda kewl...which rhymes with ....so i thought i'd share.
gracias muchachorinos!

thanx very much for listening and sharing comments....i really do appreciate it.

the guitar signal chain was my red burny 335 w/arcane pickups into an old univox super-fuzz then straight into a bogner uberschall on the lead channel set at my regular live volume level. the echoes are coming from the bogner's loop which is all lexicon pcm42(and boss fv-200L volume pedal inluded).
the amp's signal went out into a big tracking room where it was sent to a marshall jcm800 4x12 slant cab w/25w greenbacks @ 16 ohms.

the recording chain was a heil pr30 dynamic mic about 8 inches off-axis of a top speaker and also an audio-technica 40 series condenser half way across the room. both mics were sent to a couple of chandler germanium preamps then each into old 1176s for a little compression before hitting the studer tape machine which was running at 15ips.

the guitar sound that's heard in this rough mix is mainly the heil mic panned left and only a little of the a-t mic panned right...with a wee bit of lexicon m300 reverb added at the trident console....killer board!

i was playing to the tracks while sitting in the control room listening through some yamaha ns-10s, and it felt super comfortable.
chuck kavooras is a way cool engineer and his slideaway recording studio(which he bought from ambrosia guitarist/singer david pack a few years ago) is awesome! :AOK

choice!

here's a couple more clompy clips from the same recording dealio.
these are the 2 unedited passes over the initial loop-a-doop section i jammed on aimlessly when i first got set up in the studio and was basically warming up & trying to figure out what it was all gonna sound like.
my production directions were to "get out", be "loose", and play "disjointed".....whatever that means?!
chuck said that they're going to be editing stuff together from both takes...hopefully.

so the first pass is just total ran-dumb-ness on the bogner lead channel, no pedals at all(just clams),
and the mics were a bit closer to the speaker cab at this time....

http://www.johnzguitar.com/kongisland.mp3

and on the second take i was trying to play more goofy melodic/repetitive ideas while using a bad ass maestro filter sample/hold pedal that i pulled out of my stash of toyz...

http://www.johnzguitar.com/kongislandreturn.mp3

i really like some of the sonic things going on in these clips...and they're a blast to share.

good times!

john,

These are SO cool. Really great sounds. I need one o' dem sample/hold thing-a-ma-bobs.

I love it when a producer says "just go nuts on this take."

Nice job.

hey lee, hope all's well and rockin down yonder.
thanx for listening and the kind words.
those filtery pedals sure are a blast to mess with.
i've got this old maestro one going on my new mega-pedalboard that i'm having built.
should be lots of fun!

and i totally agree, when the boss of a project says..."eh, do whatever ya want, and we'll find something to use."...it's like, yay!
so speaking of which, anyways, here is the other unedited track i bleeped & blipped on for this session.....

http://www.johnzguitar.com/betweentheb.mp3

this one has some more coolish sounds imo. the only pedal i used into the uberschall on this one was a mxr phase 45, which i kick in around the middle of the take. and the mics were moved back a bit here like the first fuzzy clip i posted.
the weird thing(for me) on this groove was that there is no real tonal center(and i didn't map anything out before i played) except for some C# thingee recurring...so again, it's just a bunch of random reaching for anything.
hoping for that "fix it in the mix" fairy to appear....pleeeeease!
can being clueless help out "art" in some cases?!? oh well...good times!

if ya ever get a chance, try to slam some sounds on tape....and enjoy!
again thanx so very much for listening and sharing.

rock on!
