Backing tracks.....Where to find???

Hey gang...

Last night I saw a post that I thought was really cool. Someone had taken a backing track (slow blues) and posted their verions of guitar overlay for all to hear. What followed was a steady stream of posts with recordings of everyone elses take. How cool was that to see the different phrasings and feelings of everyone that followed. Some mighty good playing too!

My question....Where can I find backing tracks like this to play with? I've heard some great ones lately, and would love to find a few of my own to noodle with.

Happy Friday and Peace,

Hi Chris. I have a couple a couple of backing tracks discs available. Jam Tracks has 41 backing tracks in a variety of styles. The tracks are arranged by the scale type that would be used to play along. If used on a PC, the software will display the scale patterns that work with each track. The disc can also be used as a standard audio CD.

Jam Tracks Exotica
works the same way and features backing tracks for use with 10 exotic scales.

We get a CD with the UK Guitarist magazine and every month it includes some backing tracks to play along with.

Do you have a similar magazine in the states?

If we do..I'm afraid that I'm not aware of them. The only subscriptions that I get right now are those related to photograph....my profession....and I'm about finished with those. Same stuff every month. I need new material..but that's another topic.

Peace,

Right here is the best place I've found. Often members are kind enough to share the backing tracks. Check out the members soundclips forum here.

There are more than a few forums with active jamming communities of this sort. Each has a different "flavor" and style in terms of what sort of music the members tend to like. Each also has a different relationship with copyright law.

To me, the community aspect can be much more valuable than the access to backings in the long run.

So... my answer would be "depends what you're into". To generalize very broadly based just on my own impressions:

The players right here, IMHO, seem to gravitate toward a very high level of fusiony rock, jazz, funk and to a lesser extent blues. Frankly I can't often keep up with them.

The bt.forum players are far shreddier to my ear, and, err, possibly younger.

The ones at the Fender Discussion Page are kind of all over the map, but do some good stuff.

The Les Paul Forum's JamZone is a very blues-oriented place, very welcoming.

Another that I know less about first hand is MIXPOSURE.
Then there's the Aussensaiter in Germany.
And some others I'm forgetting. At many of these forums, you need to register before you'd even know the jamming communities existed (they're often hidden).

Sniff around and see if you can find one that suits your taste, interests and style -- lurk a while before you dive in, would be my advice. As with all forums they're a reflection of their overall forum communities, too. Some are essentially cutting contests, some are mostly kids of the Gee Wiz sort (not that there's anything wrong with that), others are like workshops of experienced or retired aficianados, still others are just friendly and welcoming gathering places.

I confess I've been doing a lot of online jamming over the last three years at several different forums (small kids, no time for a band, no professional ambition, but still wanna play and try new things) -- but not every place I've found interests me. I'm a bluesy kind of guy, so the LPF is my jamming home for the most part.

There are a lot of blues backing right here on TGP. You can also check Journo's site. He writes some real nice backings too.

Hi,

I have posted a number of backing tracks here in the sound clips section. The latest being a blues that had a lot of people jamming over it and posting their versions. As the originator of the track I found it very rewarding.

I have 89 BTs in very many different styles at MI7 Libraries. The link is slightly below in my signature.

Cheers,

Mats N
