power amp transformers near hard disk recorders - any danger?

OK, here's an unusual question: I'm reorganizing my project studio and am thinking of placing my Tascam MX-2424 near one of my Mackie HR-824 powered monitors -- about one foot away. (I've got a lot of gear and not a lot of space here, so I have to do my best with placement.) Is there any danger that the magnetism in the speakers and in the transformer could mess with the hard disk in the Tascam?

As I understand it, electromagnetic interference drops off exponentially the farther you are from a speaker. Whether a foot is enough, I can't say, if it were my gear, I'd give Mackie a call.

Also, check to see if they're shielded monitors.

I tend to err on the side of safety when it comes to things like this, so I'd keep them pretty far apart, at least until I speak with Mackie. In addition to the issue of the magnets on the speakers, there is the issue of vibration. you might want to put the monitors on isolation pads, such as Auralex Mo Pads, etc.

Thanks -- that makes good sense. Did a little checking - they are magnetically shielded. Mackie's FAQ says you can keep them right next to a computer screen. I think I'll just move some gear around my rack so that I can keep the MX-2424 a few feet from them. I've got Auralex Grammas under the monitors -- I did it for acoustical reasons, but I see your point about vibration too. Thanks!

I also think you're safe at 1 foot or more. Any closer would make me nervous.

Yeah, I'm not going to tempt fate. I found a spot for the Tascam well out of harm's way. Thanks!
