DiPinto Guitars?

I'm looking for a guitar to take me from bluesy Hedrix/Floyd psychedelic space-jams to heavy surf. I've been thinking a Strat or variant for its versatility but these DiPinto's seem like an interesting choice plus I'm a fan of being a bit unique whenever possible. I might be able to test one out at a place locally but it sounds like the guitar is really bright and I worry that the bridge pickup might be a bit thin. I'll let my ears be the final judge but I might not get to try it out for awhile.

I played a belvedere deluxe once. I thought that you could get both Gretsch and Strat sounds out of it. Fantastic for surf but I don't know about Hendrix. I thought that it was pretty cool and relatively inexpensive. Check one out if you can.

Well, you have 4 pickups. They can't all sound thin, can they?

I'd be interested in hearing how you like the DiPinto. I never tried one. Youtube's full of Los Straitjackets live footage, but you can't tell much from that.

Personally, I like the looks of the Belvedere better. Specially this one:

The Galaxie 4 is what I'm really looking at. Any other opinions on this brand? Are they well made...they kinda have a cheap Danelectro look to them.

I'm a DiPinto dealer. They may look "cheap" but they're well designed and very solidly built. The pickups on the Galaxie 4 are based on the pickups of the single coils used on the Vox guitars of the 60's. They sound somewhere between a Strat single coil and a P-90. They're very versatile sounding guitars especially the version with the 4 rocker switches to turn the pickups off and on. The tremolo is like a Jazzmaster so you can get some surf type bends but it's obviously not the thing for divebombs.

The Los Straitjackets model may be a bit out there for some tastes with the Silver sparkle finish and yellow Mother Of Luncheonette Counter Pickguard but they also come in a Sunburst and other solid colors for a more traditional look.

I've got one of the Galaxie 4's, in orange. I agree, it's a very well built guitar. I particularly like the neck, a medium chunk flat oval without much taper; it feels and plays great. Latest spec says the body is mahogany and that's what mine feels like; a little more heft to the tone than a typical Fender.

With all those switches there are a lot of tones, and pretty much all usable. But to be honest, I wish that they had put some whacky, out-of-phase selections in there. I've been thinking about going in and rewiring mine for just that purpose.

These things look awesome! I'm a fan of the "Classics" IE: Tele Paul & maybe even a strat.... But on the other hand if I want something different there's no point in holding back.

I tried one of these for a couple minutes and it seemed like it was made out of some type of hard plastic or something. Can anyone elaborate on this? Seemed like a decent & AFFORDABLE guitar IMHO
