when miking amps...
does it sound different if it's on the floor or on an amp stand?
I had that feeling with a Twin... I've just got a Blues Jr. and it's got more bottom when you put it on the floor in the room. Would that affect what the sounguy get from the mic too? sorry if it's a silly question. |

I know in recording it's a good thing to get the amp off the floor. I'd thinkk the same would apply to live.

Coupling Effect
I wonder if a short mike stand in close proximity to the amplifier (also on the floor) picks up the coupling effect (coupled to the floor) of the amplifier, contributing to the bass possibly in a negative way. Whew! Thats my thought for the day going back to bed!
Basically similar to what Rob2001 said but I really think it depends on the stage material, size and configuration. |

If you are close mic'ing it can make a subtle difference, but not overwhelming.
If you are room mic'ing it can make a big difference. For live you would be close mic'ing and really wouldn't worry about it in that context. |

thanks for your thoughts(including spelling
). Guess it really depends on many various factors. I noticed the B.Jr sounds fatter on the floor and I liked that so I was wondering would that translate to live situation.

I've got the best results mic'ing the amp with it on the floor. I've NEVER put the mic right on the amp when recording. I've found it's TOO hard to control the input to my interface. I usually mic an amp no closer than 1' away and my last clips of my '66 Princeton Reverb, I had the mic 5' away. I feel I get way better control of the tone that way.
