Tyler tone question -Mamywo/rosewood
Ok, I played my Tyler out this weekend, amazing guitar, LOVE THIS NECK. Super light, Perfect fret work, etc.
I'm realizing Tyler has its own thing going on, I understand it's not gonna sound like a vintage strat or a Les Paul and thats cool. However, mine has a mamywo body, rosewood board and JTV singles (in neck and middle), it's definitely a darker tone. Is there anything I can do to make it brighter? I love the guitar but I definitely am looking for more of that classic, vintage tone out of the neck and bridge pickups: Also, before anyone comments, I really love this guitar so I'm hoping there is a way to modify to my taste without selling it and getting something else... Thanks! |

I just had one for two weeks and its gone, biggest dissapointment, liked the neck, think it sounded muddy in the mids, lacked highs. Neck pickup did not have anything happening.
Good luck. |

I'm definitely not disappointed with the guitar, it just needs some modifying to suite my taste. My feeling is eveything else is fantastic about it except the tone of the neck and middle pickups. I'm not going to give up that easy! (We'll see and I'll report back!)

I had a Tyler the same as yours, Oracle. The only difference being that it had Suhr V60lp in the neck and middle. I found it to be extremely punchy with really nice highs. This one didn't have the mid-boost, but was a very loud, stratty sounding guitar. I stupidly sold it b/c I wasn't playing it a lot, but I immediately regretted it when I sold it and have already bought a Tyler Classic and plan to get another SE BW (probably with Mamywo) in the near future.
If you have a mid-boost, have you swapped the battery? Also, have you messed around with your amp settings? Worst case you should try swapping the pups. Good luck! Dave |

Mine's a classic and it has a button between the volume and first tone knob that I'm assuming is the mid boost. I've seen on the Elite's there is a battery compartment under behind the backplate. Where is it on the classic?
I'ts not in my amp (Two Rock) it's the guitar (neck and middle pups) that's giving me this muddy, dark sound. I played a John Mayer guitar through a new Twin on Sunday and I was like "this is the sound I'm looking for" Like I said though, I'm not giving up yet, the guitar is awesome just (hoping) some tweaking will dial it in for me... |

Personally I've not met a Tyler I didn't like. I think they're well worth the money. A guitar costing over $2k shouldn't need nut work or fret work or anything more than a minor set up. But with something like pickups, IMO any Tyler's worth trying a few different pups if you don't like all the tones coming from it. They're just really well built guitars that are a pleasure to play.

The reality is, it's not a tradiitional vintage style strat, it has it's own thing going on, that isn't a reflection on the quality of the instrument, that is more on me because I bought it without hearing it. It's got it's own sound, it's just not the sound I'm after...Also, replacing 2 pups is not a big deal if it solves my problems. The neck, finish, resonance and overall quality of the instrument is worth it to me...

That button (if it is a button and not a knob) should be the mid-boost bypass. Some have the mid-boost preset buttons, which I believe have 3 buttons like that. The midboost should also have the smaller knob (not a button) between the vol and tone. Some have a bypass button, some don't. The battery compartment for my classic is also in the back under the face plate.

Here's a pic of my classic with mid-boost (knob) and bypass (little black button):

I don't see that button on your pickguard in the pict? The button could be to add the Neck to whatever you have selected. On my Tyler a button does that instead of a push/pull knob but again I don't see the button on that pict you posted...I don't think Okay I think I saw it...thought it was part of the pickguard. On mine, when the button's up it adds the neck pickup.

It's there..it's just hard to see because the white perloid guard and the button is white..look close, it is right about the 5 way selector, but there is not battery compartment on the back...

Have you checked to see that it's not a coil split button or add neck pickup button? I'd think if you had the Demeter boost you'd have the control to add as much boost as you want like the Black Tyler above...but again you ordered it so you probably know what you ordered.

Yeah, they should know more detail about it. Tylers aren't typically well documented, but the dealers tend to know what they have. That doesn't look like one with the mid-boost, so no batteries to worry about. I liked the V60lps in that configuration (with no mid-boost). I didn't try any others in that guitar I had.
