Was wondering how you guys record amp clips

I'm currently recording amp clips (for demo) and for recording ideas via SM57 to maudio firewire4010 to my mac on protools. Was wondering if there are any tricks or other things i need to know to capture the sound i hear in the room. Its usually lacking highs and sounds fine, not great. anyway was wondering how you guys did it and if you had a step by step.

Thanks

Usually it can be as simple as moving the mic around. Use the old "closer to the edge of the speaker for darker, closer to the center/dust cap for brighter."

I always do mine 1/2 between the outer edge and the center, about an inch or two off of the grill.

You can also add a room mic and blend the two together by printing the room mic to it's own track.

Add a Large Diaphram condensor mic (I use an AT4040) at the same time as
a room mic....2 makes all the difference.

What happens when you compensate for the lack of highs via EQ on the Pro Tools mixer? Not a comfortable sound?

Are you recording distorted/clean? How loud are you playing? How well does your setup capture overdriven tones? Are you more content with the clean, or overdriven recordings?

That'll help figure it out

Good question! I find it easer to get a good crunchy tone on record than a fat clean tone. Still working on that!
