Egnater Mod 50 Review

Just got one off of TGP and this amp is even better than I imagined. I wasnt sure about the whole module thing but it had me very intrigued as I am an admitted ampoholic and getting modules will be cheaper than trying out amps and Im trimming the herd and thought this might be a good fit for having just one amp but different tones available through the modules. However I was wondering if getting a good tone from them would be bit harder to do, not sound close to the original and/or the amp feel like a pre amp into a power amp but I played it for about three hours and this thing has a really really good tone, gets pretty close or close enough and doesnt feel like a preamp into a seperate power amp at all. A really big suprise.

I have the DLX module thats made after the Fender Deluxe and its really close to that Fender fat clean and chime and the second channel on there has a nice pushed rythm tone with a great feel. I also got the SL2 for the Marshall vibe and it has the Marshall upper mid punch and "quack" I like to call it and has plenty of gain for leads on the second channel. The first channel has a very nice JCM 800 tone and feel. Both modules are really nice and touch sensative. The master volume works really well too. Just as good as the JVM which to date had one of the best Ive tried. I also ordered an the Randall XTC module from Music 123 so I would have a trial period to hear how it sounds like. It'll be here today. So far the modules Ive tried sound really nice and tubey with no fizz at all, nice growl from the Marshall, and warm and chimy from the DLX.

Nice features in that it has a depth and a presence knob which worked really well for low volume playing that beefs up the tone and brings the highs back when down low with no added fizz. At higher volumes the depth has a lesser effect but does making it sound a bit more modern as in a bit more bottom end. Bias knob and test points on the back for really easy biasing. The manual tells how to bias all the different tubes you can put in it. A parallel loop that sounds really good with my Damage Control Timeline delay with no tone suckage at all which is actually first for me with loops. Nice nice features! This weekend I check it out in a band setting and see how it handles that.

Next I think I'll try the VOX and Rectifier modual from Egnater.

Over all I was really really impressed. So far it seems like a really cool studio piece for its tone and versatility and next we'll see how it cuts it live.

The VX is really nice, the A channel will get really clean and the B channel has some great over drive/distortion sounds.

Two day amp building seminar
May 19/20 2007

Have you ever thought about how cool it would be to work on or even build your own amp? Where do you begin? How do you find good information? We are offering you a unique opportunity to learn about and actually build your own amp at one of our Two day amp building seminars. The classes are held at Egnater World Headquarters in beautiful Berkley, Michigan located just North of Detroit (Rock City).

Here’s how it works. When you sign up for the class, you are also purchasing a custom amplifier kit. The finished amp (that you build) is a superb sounding, hand wired Marshall JCM “style” head. The circuits we have designed for you are highly modified and create much more gain, smoother tone (no ice pick to the forehead high end) and more punch than any stock JCM you’ve ever heard. If you are familiar with our Egnater amps, the sound is similar to Channel 3 of the TOL100 or IE4 or our current EG3 module. Each “student” has his/her own work station for the two days. We then walk you through the process of building your amp kit one step at a time. You can’t fail because we are there to guide you. We take the fear out of it. You are guaranteed to walk out at the end with a great sounding amp head that you built with your own hands.

The requirements for success are simple. It helps to have some basic soldering skill, but if you have never soldered wires before, don’t worry. About 80% of the previous participants had no soldering experience at all. Within an hour or two, the fear was gone and they were “soldering fools”. You really don’t need any electronic knowledge (though it doesn’t hurt). You should be somewhat proficient at using basic hand tools (screwdrivers, nutdrivers, pliers etc). That’s it.

This is a fun and exhilarating 2 days of learning and building. There is no better feeling than taking on the challenge and succeeding at building something with your own hands. Understand this will be a busy 2 days. It is critical that you arrive well rested and be ready to “go for it”. You will see from the following pages it is important that everyone stay focused and arrive on time.

Glad to see Bruce getting some kudos. I've been a big fan of his work since i initially met him back in the early 80's. I have one of his early models, A TM75 brought up to date.

I owned a MOD100 with quite a few modules and sold it when I bought into a business.

Just recently picked up a MOD50 and am LOVING it.

IMHO, these are some of the best amps on the market and are made by an awsome, accomodating guy. Bruce and Frank are top notch in my book!

I currently have the DLX and SL2 modules and have an E Rect ordered and Bruce has my MHG module right now, modding it to Randall Ultra XL specs (with a tighter bottom).

Hopefully I will be buying the COD that is for sale here as well. I joing TGP tobuy it, but saw this post and had to comment.

Great amp in every way!

Tony

They sound like great amps. If I had the 2-3 months to wait for a new one, I would have got on the list and bought one as well, but alas I needed a gigging amp sooner than that and had to go with another, more available product.

I am very interested in these amps. I wanted to get a MOD 100 for the ultimate "all in one" package, its just so hard to decide on the modules! Im thinking a Bassman, SL2, and either the EG3/4 or MHG.

Did you get the Dumble module or did he sell it seperate? (I think Reverb had one listed?). Does yours have the reverb option? Just when I thought my amp GAS settled.
