Dual ganged 50k/250k pot. Does this pot exist? Can I make it?
So I figured out the only way to put a active/passive switch in my Clapton strat is to use a dual ganged 50k/250k knurled shaft pot in there so the top would be the volume control for the active mode and the bottom (250k) would be the volume control for the passive mode. The two pots would turn via the knurled shaft and whole thing would fit into a standard strat knob volume.
How can I make this exist? |

Well I got to thinking about it and took a bunch of old pots I had lying around and built a prototype out of a busted TBX pot I had. I replaced both disks with ones that were 50k and 250k. I just have to file down the little bump that gives the pot a center dent and I'll have what I need. It's gonna be an expensive pot when I build the working thing out of good parts but I'll be worth it.

I've seen them sold, and actually have one around somewhere-but I think it's 1MG on one of them. Tonestyler uses it as part of it's installation of the tonestyler and an auto-tone setup. Anyway, yes, they are made. You can always modify the values with resistors as well. That is also on their website somewhere. www.stellartone.com

Why not try a modular pot. Mixing values won't be a problem.

You can modify with resistors if you need to up the ohms rating. You wouldn't be able to lower it. Am I wrong? The hard one to find is the 50k part. Looks like the CTS "Tandem Tone" pots are available in 250K, 500K, and 1.25M. I need 50k and 500 or 1 meg since I'm using Noisless PU's. Still if I got one of those it would be an easier mod and cheaper then starting with the TBX which runs about $10-$15 bucks. Cause it says Fender on it.
I checked into the modular ones but I didn't think they would hold up to the punishment of being the volume knob on a blues players guitar. I go through the CTS ones about every year to year and a half. Sucker gets abused. Had any experience with them? |
