What is you opinion of the middle position on a Stat?
Hi. I haven't heard much from players about the middle position on a Strat. I guess it's like the middle child in a family: often overlooked. I always seem to stay in the middle position pickup. It has a nice bite, just the right sound for me. What are your opinions?

I use it sometimes on my EJ's. I like that it retains "strat tone with more gain. I use very little gain as it is, but when I really get dirty, the middle pup is cool.

I'll second liking that middle pickup. Seems to be that way no matter what set I have in my strat. I've had SD, Fenders and Carvins in the same strat and that middle pickup just works great for me. I probably use the bridge pickup the least - but that'll all depend on the type of music you're playing.

It's my favorite position on my Suhr.

I never cared for it much until I tried it with some D'Pergo Vintage '50s pickups. It is a really nice addition to the range of tones.....awesome in fact!!

The middle position is a position I use quite often. It is the inbetween postions that get the least amount of use from me.

Never cared for it on my AV62 RI. Its the only one I don't use on that guitar.
However, I have a Gibson LP with a P-90 in the neck and a Burstbucker 3 in the bridge and the middle position on that guitar is freaking sweet. I guess I need a sc and a hb pickup to make it work for me. |

I use it alot on my latest stratoid, I recall Robin Trower talking about the overlooked middle pickup in a GP mag 25 years ago, he said it was his most used setting

For me the middle pup gets the most use. Probably 75% of my rthymn (sp) playing is via that pup. The one position that I never use is the bridge pup. I like to use the bridge/middle combo on occassion, but never the bridge by itself... way too bright and thin for me. And of course, the neck pup is great for the blues....

The middle is the least used on my Strat, but use it on my Fender Nashville a bit.

Rarely use it when I try to mimic a bridge bucker sound with a strat.

Middle pickup is my 'go-to' pickup for clean rhythm tones. Nice piano-type tones into a near clean amp. Still has that strat 'jangle' and sits perfectly in a live mix.

In my early years of playing Strats I almost never used it, and admittedly it is still my least used position, but after seeing blues guitarist Debbie Davies use of the middle position I rethought my opinion and started using it more. With my EJ-mutt Strat (EJ Strat with an SRV Strat neck) I REALLY like that position - I use it a lot.
