Where should I send my original Ampeg R-12 for service?
It basically sounds like junk now. It's only clean at extremely low volumes. With the volume up it's nasty sounding and not in a good way. I want to be able to use it for the bedroom with a few pedals. I retubed with sovteks several years ago and haven't put any time on it since. I thought it was a blown speaker so I replaced it with a alnico weber.

Where are you located? If you're in So Cal bring it by and I'll take care of it for you.
But the unpleasant sound may be partly due to the circuit design. It may just not be the right amp for you. You've got two preamp tubes, equaling four triodes, and you've got gain, phase splitting and tremelo to accomplish with that. That kind of limits what is going on in that circuit. Unless the trem is ss driven which I highly doubt. Besides freshening it up I wouldn't go making many changes to it. If you don't like the tone I'd sell it to someone that does and buy something that will be closer to what you want.

Jess Oliver, one of the original Ampeg designers, still does amp repairs. He's in NY. I just had him check out an Oliver amp (his company, after he split with Ampeg in the late 60s).
You should be able to find his contact info on the internet. If not, PM me and I will get it to you. Greg |

Well from what i remember it used to sound decent. I just want to have the amp useable with a little clean headroom.

There's also Dennis Kager who worked at Ampeg with Ken Fisher. He's works in NJ at Central Jersey Music repair in Edison, NJ.

Of course you could replace filter caps and have tubes tested locally? Ampegs were wired by whomever with little electronics training, I've seen a few that had preamp tubes wired wrong. Why not try a good ceramic speaker before wasting money to have amp repaired? You can buy your amp for $300 in good working condition, an "expert" may charge this much with shipping costs, more than the old beater is worth?
