Anybody here use 12" speakers?

The bass player in my band has it in his head that he wants to use some 12's for his bass rig and I have a pair of empty Sunn 212LH cabs (like Entwhistle used to use) that I'd let him use for this...how do you like the 12's in comparison to more standard 10's and 15's? Also what brand/model of 12's are you using?

Most of my gigging life I played through a blackface '65 Fender Bassman with two fender 212 bass cabinets. Then I sold it and went to work and on to 15" cabinets then to a 410. I recently returned to 12" with the purchase of a Genz-Benz NeoX 212T and absolutely love the warm, rich, lush tone from this cabinet, with the tweeter turned off. No more 10's for me. From now on it will be my NeoX 212 or my pair of BE S-15D's with as many tubes as I can get in the drive train.

My bass player uses an Avatar 4x10 Neo and a 2x12 Neo. He switches up from time to time but I personally like the sound of the 2x12 better.

I use a 12" speaker in my Hartke 120 Kickback combo and an early 60's Echolette 1x12" cabinet with my Bassman. For bigger gigs I use a stack with Hartke 1x15" and a 4x10" cabs driven by a Gallien-Krueger SEB 1200.

I've been using the Bassman and the 1x12" a lot lately and like the sound. The speaker is a 75W Fane Classic. I recently bought a 15" Fane speaker which I'm going to replace the 12" speaker with just to try it out.

...a 212 is excellent, use it by itself or in tandem with a 210 or another 212...

...that being said, my current setup is 2x 210(Bill Fitzmaurice Neo Omni 10s, tons of punch & serious loudness...

...still, I'd love to get an 8x8(or two of them) from Don @ Low Down Sound in Detroit...

2x12's are very rich and natural sounding to my ears for bass and guitar, to me it's THE instrument speaker. But I also dig 8x8 cabs for some reason....

Me too. Many times I just use one with my Thunderfunk amp. Not a 12", but I just got an Accugroove TRI110L: a three way cab with a 10" woofer, 6" mid, and tow tweeters @ 29 lbs! I'm in looooove!

I was a 10's guy for a long time, until I tried and bought the Mesa Powerhouse 2x12. Now I know what midrange sounds like with a bass,
and it is good and deep too.

I have a powered 1x12" closed box that I built with an Eminence Delta 12LF on top of my 15" combo. Excellent speaker, great clarity, the response is extended enough not to need a tweeter for a decent slap tone, at least for my taste.

I use an Epifani 2x12" cab that moves a ton of air and also has that grind that 12s give you. IMO it's a great compromise. A Goliath Jr. just isn't enough box, and I hate carrying a 410 or 15" size cab.
I don't think Epifani makes the cab I have anymore.

I have played lots of speaker / cab combos and 12s are a solid choice, especially if you are going to use only one cab. I personally prefer a 4x10 & a 1x18 over a 2x12 or a 4x12, but if I were only using one cab I might go for a 2x12 or even better 2 1x12s.

I use 12's in my Hartke Pro2200 cabinet, I love them. They are a good mix of the snap of 10's and the depth and power handling of a 15.

Eminence Delta's or DeltaLites (Neo's) are the speakers to look at. In fact probably 90% of the bass cabinets out there use Eminence drivers..pretty sure every one mentioned here in this thread uses Eminence drivers, might as well go straight to the source

I have a Hartke 12 kickback. Great little amp. Direct out, and loud enough for monitor.
