Actually, that's the recipe for the Eliminator album. I have some experience with these, and would say it only sounds bad if you dislike a hot rod Marshall tone with a bit more treble sizzle. It does sound like crap for bass (I tried it once) .
First album was probably an early Marshall or tweed Fender.

I was running an expandora into my tweed twin and carr slant 6v and got great results for BFG tone in all three modes usually with the volume maxed and the gain lowered. I also perfered the dip switch on the base not the guitar setting.

I recall that he once used Legend solid-state hybrid amps, as mentioned in an earlier post.
