Plain ol' ASATs?

Hi,

This is my first post so, please, be gentle (you've got a wonderful thing going here). I've been digging around and I can't quite get a handle on what the plain ol' ASAT (not Classic or Special) sounds like. Are they Jazzmasteresque? Tele-like? Something else? I just picked up a '97 Classic and love it, so I'm wondering if I make the trek to visit a straight ASAT if I'll be getting (essentially) more of the same or something different. Many thanks -E

I have a different take on ASATs...the caveat here is that I have a Tribute Classic Semihollow and can't think of a better sound for my tastes. I think that the larger MFDs have a more compressed sound than the pickups on the Classic. For me, the Classic MFDs have a wide open, full sound that I like much better than the ASAT pickups.

But, that's just my opinion, of course.

Actually, quite different than an ASAT Classic. The pups are more powerful and will give you a fatter (for lack of a better word) tone. Not tele, P90, or HB. They definitely have their own sound.

I have an ASAT Classic Custom Semi-Hollow, which has the ASAT Classic pup in the bridge and an overwound ASAT pup in the neck. The neck pup will drive your amp much easier and the in-between tone is still sweet and tele-like. It's a real nice mix of the two.
