I Played a $9,000 Amp Yesterday

Found it at Imperial Guitars in Newburgh,NY

A 59 Black Fender Twin Model 5F8-A

And you know what, pretty good sound, not bad for an old amp. Sounds nothing like a new Fender Twin though

For an amp without the original tweed or speakers, that is one high price. I'd have played it and probably loved every second of it too, but I can't see who is gonna lay the cash down on this one.

I agree! Maybe the guy is misinformed and thinks it's custom shop?

Those high-powered twins are pretty rare, but I totally agree with LowWatt on this. All original and I could see it getting that kind of dough easily. I also wonder if the circuit has been altered in any way, like maybe modded to blackface?

"Sounds nothing like a new Fender Twin though "

Of that I am sure.

My brother (Special20) and nephew are in Imperial all the time. I'll give them a call and see how they like it.

The speakers have been reconed, doesn't that decrease the value?
That's damn expensive, just get yourself a twin for 10% of the price or get someone to build you one that sounds just like it for 20%

The Vintage 30s are pretty far from original equipment so I don't see why it would matter if they have been reconed or not.

I had a couple of original '59 and '60 Twins, but when they hit $3000 many years ago I sold them thinking that was just nuts.

Those are great amps, but kind of a bad design. The cabinet is too small for that power, the original P12Ns can't handle the amp either. The GZ34 rectifier is really taxed in that circuit as well which is why they only really put out about 60 Watts and get pretty saggy when cranked. The clean sounds however are spectacular.
It really comes alive when plugged into a 4X12.

I kept a low power '56 Twin which I think sounds nicer.

Yeah I got the low powered version when I got a head made by Louis Electric for this sort of reason. Probably the same reason Fender went with the '57 Twin for the reissue.

Got a 5C8 here, the one that uses the octal preamp tubes, one recto tube. The later 5D8 had the dual recto and nine pin preamps
