just got my Modded Omega HRD 2x12

so far, pretty amazing, so far, the louder you turn it up, the better it sounds, this amp is deff not for *****'s, lol, billed as a 3 channell amp but so far seems like there's not much difference between drive/more drive except a slight boost. anybody own one of these bad boys?, if so can you share some settings you find effective?. haven't played it on gig yet so ill keep updating on the Omega Mod. All though it sounds real freaking good at living room levels, this beast is begging to be un leshed,

Well, the pull pot on the treble knob, is the mid=boost.
I don't know anything about how to tightening up the bass response, that is new to me and the bright switch,is just like an xtra brightnes on cleans, and mid engaged, gives more edge to the tone, w' the drive channels, sounds more like a boost, IMO, what do you think?...
BTW, would you share those settings when you get them from Jim,
Thanks!

Great sounding amp for sure and I concur -the Omega modded HRD/HRDx is at its best at full volume. Congrats and enjoy!

Is the Omega clean different from the regular clean? If so, in what way?

Hey greggorypeccary,

Being a former Omega Amps modded Hot Rod Deluxe owner, the Omega Amps Hot Rod Deluxe/Deville mod makes the clean channel totally blackface. The stock Hot Rod Deluxe/Deville tone doesn't even compare to it.

I think the omega deluxe clean sound is very blackface like. Beautiful round bottom, up front shimmering highs and relatively scooped mids. oops sounds like my girlfriend, lol. No really, I have 3 blackface amps to compare against and I have a/b'd them. The clean channel takes pedals well, I use an FD2, TS808, chorus and flanger occasionally with it. I love the od tones, powerful, very rich and midrange dominant. The first couple gigs I played with it though, the band and musicians in the audience commented I wasn't cutting through with the od. I changed the settings to reduce mids (about 10 o'clock) and decreased the drive setting to about 12 o'clock. Although I change them somewhat with different guitars and pickup combinations it's more of a tweak rather than a large change. These all with the volume and master around 11-12 oclock. Couldn't go much higher in the clubs we're playing, also at an outdoor gig left it about the same.

I'll try it soon and let you know. Its funny about sound bytes, i loved the various bytes on the Omega Amp website. Clean-Blackface-Drive-Dumble-More Drive-Marshall. I'm so far not getting those exact sounds per say, and to be honest I don't care if it sounds a certain way. I just think it sounds rich and a lot deeper sounding then my stock HRD. It might have to do with what type of guitar you use, your touch, technique, etc. I'm looking forward to finding out all this about this amp as i use to more. I always thought the idea of the Fender HRD was great, but the stock amp kinda sucked. This Mod truly brings out the full potential of this amp. I really wish I could afford Two Rocks and Fuchs and Mary Jane of what ever that amp is called but this amp will give any boutique amp a run for its money and makes it possible for a middle class full time musician like myself to sound right when I gig or record or just have fun
Well..... Finally, starting to warm up to this Amp!......About time!

Always wonder why too many TR and Fuchs for Sale?......

Just go and fire up whatever Clean ,Blackface, Or Drive ,Knock'em dead!

I received my HRDx back from Jim on Monday and my first impression with the clean channel was "Wao, holly s&*t!". I've been gigging with my Kingsley D52 (another monster with a mix of Vox meets Marshall meets Fender tones) for six month and the HRDx "was" my backup amp. The clean channel is now very tonefull and still pedal friendly. For my taste, the stock OD is unusable! Omega's mod makes it warm and thick with enough attitudes to keep you hooked for hours. I read that the modded OD sound better at higher volume (I live in an apartment) and my first gig with it will be tomorrow, so I’m very excited that I’ll be able to put the master volume higher than at home so soon!!

And the best of all is Jim’s charge for this mod and how fast he gets it back to you. I didn’t have to spend over $1k ($400 used amp + 280 Omega mod w/Bassman choke + 60 shipping both ways= $740) in a boutique amp to get Blackface cleans with an outstanding OD. He magically turned a regular and cheap amp into a tone monster. It’s unbeatable the price and sound you get for so less.

it is magic, your totally right- I just cant believe that more people dont know about this, plus theres no wait to get it done, Id like to keep this thread going and hear from more Omega Amp owners cause Jim Price is such a great and very talented Amp tech. Im going to try and post some sound bytes sometime to show people just how intense this newly modded amp sounds. In my world, I cant afford 3 grand for something that doesent sound any better if not worse then my Omega Modded 2x12, and I challenge anybody to prove me wrong.

I email Jim about the mod, but haven't got a response back yet. I was planning to ditch the HR Dlx, but I'm in need of a 112 to use for some fill in gigs for the summer.

Has anybody tried the amp with a Celestion? I was looking at the Shiva and the Mesa Stiletto. I tend to go more for a little rougher OD. The clips sound great on the site, but they are a little smoother than what I'm looking for.

Digging up a relic here!

I found out that Omega is not far from where I live and I do believe I am going to take/ship my amp over there!

If any of these original posters are still around are you guys still happy? :AOK

yep

still diggin' my HRDx ala Omega.

tweaks:

Put in an Eminence Cannabis Rex:AOK

Drive / More Drive were way plenty for me
so I stuck in a 5751 (70% of an 12AX7) in V1 :AOK
It does take max. vol. down a smidge

Jim also stuck a 12B?? in v2

6L6 Tubes:
Got some rattley ones. The amp rocks, and you wanna rock it, so stuff rattles and shakes
I've put in spring retainers:AOK get em from Antique Electronic Supply
Still, current JJs are physically rattley (mechanical rattle only heard from back of amp...like shaking a lightbulb that has a busted filiment)
I might try those blond silicone rings that stretch and go over the 6L6 glass itself.

I think the amp would definitely like a pair of nice NOS 6L6s, like RCAs or something.

I don't know how fussy y'all are about biasing power tubes. But its easy to do on this amp. A recent look at mine by Jim caused him to crank the bias pot up about halfway in its travel as I'd had it turned down all the way

Recently got a DRRI and put a C-Rex and Weber Beam Blocker in that and I would rate the DRRIs blackface clean a smidge better than the HRDx.
A'course Omega's mod.s totally transform the HRDx.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. I think the dr./more dr. sounds ARE d*mble-ish.

If you're one of the billion or so folks who use a HR amp, the Omega mod.s will make you love it more, and the cost-effective mods. / attention will make the amp last a lot longer.

I think its really cool that this kind of mod.(s) is/are available for this family of amps...great bang for buck.

Can be a great introduction for folks about amp tweaking.

Costs of amp hobbying:

Low for this level of mod
Med. for making a clone or clone w/improvements
Higher for outright boutique retail purchase
High for vintage plus NOS supplies

I have a modded HRDx and it's a killer amp for the $$$. Even so, it's not making my Two Rock go away any time soon.

I tend to compare it to a Mesa Mark 1 more than a D-style amp. Even with the Omega, my Zendrive gets more of "that" sound than the Omega drive channel.
