Looks like it's time to sell a kidney... (65Amps content)

FINALLY got up to Emerald City Guitars here in Seattle to plug into the various offerings by 65Amps. They had the Royal Albert, Soho, and London, as well as the 1x12 cab w/ Celestion Alnico Gold and the 2x2 w/Alnico Gold & G12H-30. I plugged a Gibson Les Paul Elegant with '57 Classic p/u's.

In one word... STELLAR. All three are very dynamic, responsive, organic tone machines of British flavor. The Royal Albert is the simplest - as a nmv amp, I ran it in the 35 watt setting to get just a little dirt, and plugged it into the 2x12 cab. I spent less time with this one since it was sooo damn loud and my interest really lie with the other 2. Definitely is a smooth sounding amp with enough bite to make it interesting, with very complex cleans and killer mid-gain tones. I'd say it lives in the realm of a Tweed Bassman/JTM-45, but it has a more interesting voice and really interesting tone that separates it from those.

The London provided two great channels - Vox and Marshall - and an unbelievable tremolo. The head is huge (as mentioned here before). I plugged it into both the 1x12 and the 2x12, and was really surprised with the hugeness of tone even with the 1x12 - though I preferred the spaciousness of the 2x12 over the 1x12 by a slight margin. And at only $100 more, I figure it's a worthwhile option. The two channels nail similar breakup, headroom, and overall gain, but the Vox side is definitely more thick and chirpy and the MArshall side more hi-mid karaaang. I fell in love with both channels - the Marshall side sounded MUCH huger than the actuall Marshall 1974X reissure examples I've played!

The Soho - this is the one I'm selling a kidney for. What a killer amp - features and tone wise! Having both more gain and headroom than the London, as well as a switcheable master and a kick-ass "bump" feature, I think this amp pretty easily matched the tonal quality of the London but with some great additional features. I was most impressed with the fact that I could dial a stellar clean at the edge of breakup, then adjust the bump feature for precisely the amount of boost I wanted to hit (and the boost's tone with its single volume knob). Wonderfully tweakable with minimal controls to suck tone, I felt the amp's natural tone sat exactly where the guitar likes to live.

After today's test run, I can understand why no one can have just one! I could see both a Soho and a London in my future; but the Soho's my first choice by a hair. So... likely I'll have to unload something from the current stable and replace it with the Soho and matching 2x12 cab.

:AOK

So, those of you who own Soho's... tell me what you are diggin' about these killer amps!

Wow, I've got to get down there and try out those amps. I went down to Emerald City a couple of weeks ago to try out an Orange and Dr. Z and saw the 65's there but didn't plug in. Looks like I'll be heading back over sometime soon!

You can't have just one . . .

(l-r) London, Soho, Marquee Club

I'm gigging with the Soho and I love it. It has a wonderful clean tone. Big, full, and punchy. BTW The amp looooves pedals. The master volume and the mid-range bump make the amp lethal at low volumes. Everyone that hears this amp loves it.

You'll be glad you did! On the contrary, I neglected to try the Dr. Z's and the Oranges, but I'm pretty set on the 65Amps stuff anyway.

It was my first time at Emerald City Guitars, and after the pleasant experience yesterday, it's my favorite new hangout. Those guys were a class act.

Woah - sweet collection. How does the Marquee compare to the others? Is it worth consideration over the Soho? Is the Soho loud enough for live gigs?

How do you like the combo config of your London compared to the head/cab setup of the Soho?

Best offer, no trades.

Local sales only. I don't want to ship this sucker.

See, that's the beauty of it. I can spare one! Notice I didn't offer my liver.

The 65 amps stuff seems to have a small "cult" following around here. Many owners gig most weekends, and may not see the post's about 65Amps.

I've had the London 2x12 combo since last fall. I gig mine loud without a mic most shows. Hows the Clean HR with the Soho vs. the London. When I need some cleans I use my strat's, but I sometimes could use just a tinny bit more HR....

The Soho has more clean headroom than the London. Apparently, this is deliberate (according to the website). This is another thing that has me a bit more interested in the Soho, though I can see owning both someday.
