Fuchs ODS30 and ODS50

I'm sure this question has been asked previously - please forgive me for the redundancy. I did a search but didn't find my answer.

Besides the price and wattage, what are the key differences between a Fuchs ODS30 and it's bigger brother the ODS50. One thread that I found mentioned the fact that they are different but didn't say how. For someone who is on the fence, what would sway one in either direction?

Thanks all,

Bill (bilbal)

ODS30 - cathode biased, 4- 6V6's factory but can run 2 - 6L6's

ODS50 - fixed biased, 2 - 6L6's only

that's basically it physically. Of course the tone and feel is bit different because of the cathode vs fixed biased circuit.

In simple terms what is the difference between cathode and fixed biasing?
What would my Dr. Z Route 66 and Maz38Sr heads be?

ODS30 is a 6v6 or 6L6 Fuchs Will also make you ODS50 with 6v6's and a half power switch, there are some around. The tone is slightly different so you may want to hear them both. They sound terrific.

ANY Fuchs amp will do those sounds/tones WAY better in real life.....If you really want to get one going, put a Les Paul through it.....!!!!!!!!!!!

Had both of them. Got rid of the 50 and got the 30. The 6v6's have a little more chime to them; more of a F*N*E**ISH sort of quality.

Plus, I run mine with two tubes pulled for 15w operation. I'm in heaven!

The 50w had the 6l6's and the feel was a bit stiffer. I'm loving the 30w!

Interesting. Pulling two of the power tubes doesn't affect (negatively) the amp in any way does it?

Also Hey Deaj:
I would like to hear the clips also if it's not too much of a hassle.

Thanks,
bilbal

Hi Bilbal,

No hassle at all.

The amp settings are most likely very similar for each clip: Input gain set to 11 o'clock, OD engaged (OD input gain set between 10 and 11 o'clock / OD Output set to 12 o'clock), Jazz/Rock switch set to Rock, Bright off, Deep off, Mid boost off, Gain boost off, all tone controls and Accent set at or near 12 o'clock, Reverb off, and master volume set to ~9 o'clock.
...most likely

The guitar is an alder strat with a maple/maple neck and a Fralin Unbucker PAF in the bridge position, Fralin Real '54's neck and middle. I'm pretty sure all were recorded using the bridge PAF. I used the guitar volume to set the amount of overdrive.

These were recorded with different microphones (Shure SM57, AKG C1000-S, CAD M39 - can't be sure which was used for which recording though). A touch of delay and reverb were added using s/w plugins.

The playing is pretty rough - I don't get out much these days.

Thanks!

I managed to get a few free minutes this afternoon to record a clip of the Real 54's (same guitar described in earlier post) through the Fuchs ODS50 SLX, a 1x12 combo loaded with an 80's OEM EVM-12L.

The amp was set as follows: Input gain at 11 o'clock, Brite off, Deep off, Jazz/Rock set to Rock, Mid Boost off, Gain Boost off, Bass/Mid/Treble all at 12 o'clock, OD enabled, OD input at 9 o'clock, OD output at 3 o'clock, Master Volume at 8 o'clock (my wife is taking a nap ), Accent at 9 o'clock, Reverb off.

I used a Shure SM57 right on the grillcloth, about 1" off center of the voice coil. Recorded in Sonar Producer 6, reverb and delay added to the guitar track in the mix. The guitar is a little loud in the mix.

I started with the pickup selector set to position 5 (neck)
At 1:21 I switched to position 4 (neck/middle)
At 2:18 I switched to position 3 (middle)
At 3:25 I switched to position 2 (middle/bridge - the bridge pickup is a Fralin Unbucker PAF split to single coil at position 2).

This was a no warm-up, one-take deal so there are clams-o-plenty. It should suffice to give you an idea of how the Real 54's sound in this setting though.

Here's the clip. Enjoy!
