SRO in the house

Not Standing Room Only, the old EV SRO speaker. I found a vintage one in good shape the other day and put it in the Bogner Cube I use with my Fuchs ODS 100. Took out the Sholtz sugarcone. Got a bit of a layoff for summer vacations so I won't be able to gig with it for a couple of weeks but at home it was a revelation. The Sholtz tamed the forwardness of the Tonker I had before but didn't sound as dry and lifeless as the EVM I had also tried. When I put the SRO in there, the top opened up compared to the Sholtz like you wouldn't believe. Not that dry hi-fi sound of the EVM, but a natural clarity over reasonably complex warmth that made the Sholtz sound dry and dull. It will be really interesting to get this out.

Why doesn't EV reissue this one?

AFAIK, Weber Chicagos are copies of the SRO style speakers.

Which version of the SRO is it? The white coffee can version with alnico mags or the black finned cast back with ceramic mags?

I'm partial to the ceramic version and own several. Damn fine speaker, really good for high volume work. Stays tight in the bass but is warm, not sterile. Not the same sound as the EVM series that followed it.

Actually, the Weber Michigan is the SRO clone. I've got 3 Ali SROs & a couple Michigans - they're real close

Ahhh the SRO.

I found a 4x12 loded with them almost 20 years ago and I havn't looked back.

I ditched the cab but I still have the speakers. They let the amp be itself. There is no color and they handle anything I throw at them.

I love em. I have one in a 1x12, I have a 2x12 loaded with em and the spare which needs a recone.

Nice score. They are great speakers.

These have a white frame with a large black finned heatsink on them. I'd heard something about AlNiCo SRO's but these are far too heavy to be that unless they have the largest AlNiCo magnets ever seen. Interesting that there are two versions. So, this looks like an EVM with a slightly smaller voice coil and a plastic dustcap and a big honking piece of metal on an already heavy speaker. I'd found one earlier on but the frame had been cracked and epoxy/riveted back together at most of the spokes. I was told that this was common due to the weight of the magnet assembly. Never seen this in EVM's before and there's nothing wrong with this one. Looking foward to next weekend, one indoor and one outdoor gig where I can get it going.

I have one of those (white frame, huge magnet) collecting dust in my basement. Thinking of putting it in my Marshall Studio 15...

Been using them forever(heavy ass white coffeecan alnico's). I love them, punchy and smooth. Mostly used them in 1x12' cubes, but recently put them into my Custom Audio 2x12 for my Bogner XTC. The weight of the cab is a bit of drag, however.

Peace,
Duffy

Ugh! I hate that! I totally knew that. Right after I typed Chicago I was thinking "hmmmm... something seems wrong, just can't tell what it is." Don't you hate it when that happens?

No concerns about blowing the speaker with the XTC?

You could probably even use 1 SRO with the XTC.

Funny you mention that, I ran 1 in a cube a few weeks ago and l noticed the next day it was buzzing. Loaded it back into the 2x12 and will use it untill it goes compleatly and will have to have it refurbed. But it is a pain to find someone to do it to original spec.

Peace,
Duffy
