taming hair triger volume in Fender Hot Rod Deville??

Anyone know how to do it? Any mods?

My friend bought this amp since it was relatively inexpensive and had nice cleans. However like the hot rod deluxe, the deville has a hair trigger or a master volume. Its either off or its loud! I was wondering what are the possibe solutions (besidesgetting another amp!!)? Any suggestions- volume pedal? New taper pot?

If it's the Master Volume on the gain channel, that can be swapped with an audio taper pot. If your problem is with the Volume control on the clean channel, that already is an audio taper pot (contrary to what some have said) and a pot switch won't work.

You could always run a volume box in the effects loop. Something like these:

Hey Dewman,
Check out this site, it has some mods that will work with the Deville.

^^
And the 2 fixes I listed above are the 2 fixes listed on Justin's site.
However, the term 'Master Volume' gets confusing as the 'Volume' control is often refered to as the 'Master Volume', even though there is another 'Master Volume' on the amp. One of which you can change for the better, the other which you can't.

Simple fix--had one and replaced the 12ax7 in V1(far right from back of amp) with a 12at7 (12ay7 will also work). Before, could not turn volume past 2 1/2--after,smooth transition up to 5-6. Improved overall sound of the amp IMHO--even the crappy overdrive was better.

You can also use 500k audio pots on both volume controls for even better results.

Forgot about that one!
I'm running a JAN/GE 12AT7 in my V1 and that works nicely.
I've also run an 12AU7 in there as well, and the volume reduction was a little too much for me actually. Makes for great bedroom volumes though with that trick
