"Foxrox vs Analogman" Silicon Fuzz Clips

A couple of short, hurriedly recorded clips featuring the Foxrox BC109 Hot Silicon and Analogman's BC108 Sun Face. First clip starts out with Tele Kinman Broadcaster bridge pickup and AC30's Normal Channel half way up on the dial, then comes the Hot Silicon, next more dry guitar, then the Sun Face. You'll always hear the HS followed by the SF in this one...

This clip follows the same routine, except at 0.53 they inexplicably switch order and the Sun Face comes first...

Both pedals are at maximum volume and roughly 95% of their gain potential. Since the BC108 has internal bias, it remains at the factory setting. I balanced the grit control of the Hot Silicon around noon. Ideally I would have caught some lead and response to volume changes at the guitar, but not today.

Tea... :BEER

wow I like both. This comparison was something I was looking into, thanks these clips are great.

yea the Foxrox seems have more of a high gain sound while the sunface seems lighter, but are great sounding fuzzes. seems the sunface is a bit brighter as well, hmm tough call here.

Tough call indeed! Even I can't choose between them and I have them both here. The Sun Face is definitely a touch brighter and has a little less low end, possibly better suited to an amp that's already breaking up quite a bit. Where the Hot Silicon just sounds huge, even when the amp is quite clean.

Since my BC108 has internal bias control, the difference between the two could come down to the fact that the Hot Silicon has it's grit control conveniently located on the outside. This gives access to more sounds and makes it more versatile. Here's a little of the HS at extreme grit settings, with gated, sputtery sounds...

Great clips, thanks for doing this!

They both sound very good, and actually quite close in a way. The AM is definitely a touch brighter. Which would you say retains more of the original tone's eq curve the best. It sounds like the Foxrox is a touch darker and the AM a touch brighter than the original tone, but that's just through these PC speakers.

can't you get a sundial on the sunface as with the nkt one's, to control the bias control. I love my nkt sunface, but am gonna add a silicon counterpart so i was gonna pick between these two.

Your AC30 sounds awesome without the fuzz! Need to get one...

The foxrox has a nice saturated and more modern sound to me. Dave knows his fuzzes.

thanks and have fun!

The FoxRox has a more gravelly and loose sound to it which I actually like alot. The Analogman sounds a touch brighter yet a touch more refined.

More than welcome mate! You nailed it, each probably sits just above or below the natural eq of the amp and guitar. If I had to pick, the Sun Face is a touch closer, if only because it is taking a Tele bridge and Vox combo over the edge, which is a pretty bright base sound to begin with.

Yeah, it just so happens that this Sun Face lacks the external dial. My previous one had it and offered the same control, although I don't remember it getting quite as gated and broken as the Hot Silicon does, possibly the result of the extra gain on tap.

Thanks Mike! Are you seriously saying you don't have an AC30 already? You are The Man who has everything! Mine's just a UK built Korg TBX from 2003, but it has served me well. Cranked with just a Beano in front, it's the sound of God Almighty himself... now I just need the high gain NKT275 I've been promising myself for so long.

Oh, and I think it's safe to say that both of you guys know your fuzz. :AOK

Sweet. I need to get my hands on one of Analogman's BC-108 fuzzes so I can compare it with both the FoxRox and the original.

I always think of the FoxRox as the end-all and be-all of silicon fuzzes, but Nothing I've heard from Analogman has been anything less than overwhelmingly superkickass.

You definitely should, there is enough difference between their sounds to warrant owning both, imo. Plus, I'd love to hear your clips comparing the two, you always make killer clips!
