pot question
Has anyone ever changed the volume pot in a fender deluxe from linear taper to audio taper? It's really annoying that you can't fine adjust volume and you basically have "off" or "loud". are there any amps that do use audio taper pots?
Does it change the sound of the amp much? thank you

My friend's Fender is like this - right outta the box. I'm not sure if its a case of linear vs logarithmic or just a poor quality pot.
Changing from one to the other has no effect on tone.

You used to be able to get reverse audio taper pots to help with this, I don't know where to get em anymore. The Plexis used to do this, they would leap to life like crazy until you hit "2" on the dial, everything after that was just more distortion, no more volume.

The problem is the Deluxe has a bright cap on the volume control that makes the volume come in early. If you clip the cap off the volume pot works more in an audio fashion. However, the amp may be too dark for some tastes.
the bright cap is a 47pf cap and it adds a slight boost too. |

You can modify the cap by putting it in series with a fixed resistor which will soften the effect of that cap. That's the way I bypass the vol on my guitars, by the way.
