4 Tonelab LE Tones~Youtube Clip (live)

Here's a montage of tunes of our Funk/Cover Band playing live last week ...
I'm running a Tonelab LE through a fullrange Bose L1

YouTube - NEAL BANKS BAND MONTAGE I

1st song: The Way You Move = Very Clean Blackface w/4 x 10 (no mids, hardly any gain ..)

2nd song: We Want the Funk = Same as above & then with Tonelab's Wa-Wa on ...

3rd Song: Evil Ways = Dumble Clean(2 x 12)= Dumble OD w/Tube Screamer ...

Here's a seperate clip for one song (Clean Blackface + Dumble OD w/Treble Booster)

YouTube - NEAL BANKS BAND - SMOOTH

At all times I have a Maxon CP101 optic compressor on in front of the LE ...

(Occasionally you'll also hear guitar synth mixed in on a few tunes ...)

Please share your impressions if you would ...

(Note: I wasn't trying to sound like a Dumble or a Twin per se...
Just tweaked thus named settings to form tones of my preference ..)

Sounds great.

Does the compressor in front make that big of a difference?
What are you using for a monitor?
Have you found any tricks to dialing in a good clean sound?

Thanks,

John

On Evil Ways I wanted your solo sound to be louder in the mix. It was hard to really get much of a read on the tone on that tune. Probably just the mike on the video recorder. The cleans all sounded great! Looks like a fun band. Good work.

Thanks back at ya John ..

It may not to some, however I'm a compressor always on type of guy..

it doesn't matter if it's a Tonelab, my Lonestar or Classic Peavey...
to me it smooths out all the edges which otherwise might be unacceptable to my ears ...

Yes, there are certainly tweaking tricks for clean tones
if you want them to stay really clean at loud volumes ...

One of them being a in front of the unit Optic Compressor...
Optic compressors can also work as pristine clean boosts very well..
& for the best clean tones available on the Tonelab LE,
I believe an outside boost is necessary to get 'em loud enough ...

As for a monitor ...
the Bose L1 system works very well as a power amp with speakers
& as a stage monitor ...

Whatever it is you're doing, you're doing a great job because you made that rig sound great! This proves that with polished playing and tasteful tweaking, you can get modeling to sound great live. I'm amazed you were able to cut through the mix without cranking the mids.

Outstanding man. You're a player's player.

When you hear other guys ripping this piece of gear or that piece of gear - 'no cut' blah blah, then you hear something like you've got here. Whew.

Killer stuff. You've got that 'thing' man. Gear be damned. It's about the music.

Great band too. Thumbs up.

Thanks The Chris...

You have amazing ears my friend ...
Yes, no Mids cranked at all ... just a touch of 'em on each setting ...
Quite astute indeed ...

Thank you ever so much Scott....
Very honored by such words from someone such as yourself,
who I consider to be a great player ...

& Right, when it get's down to the nitty gritty...
It's only about the music every single time ...

Great clip...I love your playing!
I had to quote Scott's post because it was well said.
Whatever helps you do what you do is all good. You sound comfortable on the Tonelab. I'm a guy that's jumped from using tube amps live to using modelers live then back to tube amps, I'm using the Tonelab now. I've definitely realized that whatever I play through I sound like me (for better or worse)

It's like what Steve Vai said one time when he jumped on Eddie Van Halen's live rig one time. He was so surprised that he didn't sound at all like Eddie when he played through it....it sounded like him, and it woke him up that a lot of it is in the hands.

Thanks so much for checking out the Videos Randy ....

Great story about Vai with EVH's rig ...

The valuable factor about the Tonelab is it's organic feel....

Had my SE, GNX3000 & PODxt Live out all this week...
Kept going back & forth from each one to the Tonelab LE ...
Though I can get great tones out of all of them..
none of 'em feel to touch like the Tonelab LE ..

Though I wasn't aware so much of it before,
it seems what folk were saying about the latency issue being improved
by Vox cutting back on the SE's effects & expression pedal... is very true...

The sensitivity & immediacy of note attack on the LE
is much more natural compared to the others ...

By the way, I just listened to your clips..
Really great playing ...

I agree, the feel of this unit is very nice, something I haven't experienced with a modeler up until now. Like you, I'm a gigging guitarist (3-5 nights a week) this simple/versatile kind of setup is what I love to slug around...and far as modelers, the Tonelab LE won't be going anywhere until something much better comes along one day.

Thanks for the compliment on the clips. :BEER
