Would you reccomend a graphic eq or an aural exciter to e hance bass tone?

I am looking to buy one of these to add to my rack. I already have the tech 21 rbi bass pre amp, but I need more for my tone. I am lookinf for a bright, punchy sound that is good for slapping. I am not sure which would benefit more, or maybe even something else? I need some opinions or maybe some more eq tips! thanks...

HOW ABOUT A Behringer MDX2600 Composer Pro XL Compressor? I am looking for soomething extra to give me that real Punchy, mudvayne slap sound that cuts though well, I hope this is the right piece of equipment to help me achieve that.

A comp is basically necessary for serious slapping.

I would not suggest a Behringer.

I read a lot of reviews on the product and they were all good, plus, you can't beat the quality for that price. I have heard nothing but good things about them, why don't you like them?

Quality control (do they have any?), inferior sound (though admittedly effective for the price), obnoxious business practices (i.e. copying of other companies' designs wholesale)... I've also got a standing rule of never cheaping out on effects, especially if they're an important part of your sound. The Behringer is a home-studio-on-the-cheap-as-possible device, and one would do well to look a few steps up the ladder if one is looking for good bass sound (and you don't need the de-esser, gate, and tube sim in the Behringer).

Not a big time slapper, though I've done my share in the past. Usually only one or two songs per set. Never found the need for a compressor live, though I agree it's a part of the modern slap formula.

As to an exciter type device, I'd avoid it. If you really think you need it, I'd suggest there's something else wrong with your signal or technique.

exciters will disappear in a band live mix. A good eq can always help, but then there may be one on your amp....and what kind of bass are you slapping?

A Modulus Flea bass, I also have a tech 21 rbi pre amp, but I wanted something a little extra. I think the compression will do it, and the pre amp will do the rest as far as staying in the mix.

+1 on the compressor. I too would steer clear of Behringer. I use a TL Audio Ivory Valve compressor and it really is the business. I also use oner of the EBS stompbox compressors when I'm using my small rig and this is a good cheaper alternative.

I agree that a compressor would help you, however I would reconsider your pre-amp selection before I would add a comp.

The RBI is a good preamp, but is is known more for great gritty ballsy tone.

Two predominant thumpers: Larry Graham was using an H&K last I heard, Flea uses GK's.

I would go with an Alembic F1-X- many thumpers have used these too. I'm not a thumper per se, but when I do my Demeter does a good solid job. It's clean- very clean and has a wonderful tight bass.

EDIT: And steer clear of Berhinger. Between my band and I we've owned 8 units and 5 went bad within 3 years.

I play in a metal band though, and my sound cannot be completely compressed into a flea funk sound... That is the reaosn why I have the tech 21, I figure a mixture of that and a comp will give my the in-between sound I am looking for, ex. funk-metal?

This little box is great bang for the buck, IMHO. You might give it a try.

I play in a metal band also- the Demeter is great.

I use a dBX 160x comp, but only for speaker protection.

I would still upgrade the pre-amp.
