Value of an '82 Jazz bass
Bound neck,Maple board, Pearl block inlays Ash body (Stripped) original hardware/electronics.
This bass belongs to a friend of mine, he bought it new when we were in highschool. it's been stripped and refinned (pretty badly) in clear. For some stupid reason he removed the serial # from the headstock. I can vouch for him and the guitar but I understand that this is a turn off for some people. Anyway I'm just looking for a roundabout value. Thanks in advance

Need to see it and have some more info about it. However, there is only one reason somebody removes a serial number.

I've tried to edit my post so as not to be rude, but I'm not able to do so. Let me rephrase:Why was the guitar stripped of any identification?

82's are in that period of you never really know what it is...when the parts were made...I stay away from anything that has been altered in such a manner, unless its basically free.
82 with binding and blocks? |

neck date 10/82...again I know the guy and he bought it new. I haven't got a clue why he took off the serial#. Anyway I told him I'd research the value knowing full well that the Serial # removal is a huge issue and he's aware of the issue as well

The other big issue is that the body finish has been stripped. If it is a Jazz re-issue from '82 in excellent original condition it would be worth around $2500 private sale and expect to pay anything up to $3500 from a dealer. Standard jazz basses from that year probably around $1500 mark. Stating that the serial number has been removed from the headstock makes me conclude that it is a standard bass from that era.
The poorly refinished body is likely to halve the value. and removing the serial number may even halve the value again. |
