You may as well throw in the towell, I figgered it out..Digital is the way to go[vid]
'cept you need to have a high quality power amp.
I am using the preamp section of either my Chieftain or my Yamaha DG1000. Then returning back to the power section of the Chieftain. This is whacky! Early testing has rendered the following conlusion. At gig volume, with other sonics happening, the most important aspect for me is the feel of the rig. I can fiddle with tone controls to get some pretty happening sounds that I am very satisfied with. Still, my favorite tones are from plugging straight in to the amp, but that is pretty worthless in the context of the real world. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5a42JYtC-Q Emee

Too many knobs, too much diddling.
I would rather pile my guitars and amps in a field and set them on FIRE than ever use any form of digital modeling.
As for plugging straight in being worthless, I don't know what world you live in (parallel universe?) but in MY world, it's the way to go. Plugged straight in. |

Certainly not my cup of tea, but if it ossifies yer noodle, that's what's important.

I would rather set my entire rig on fire before I try to do what am doing with a tweed deluxe [as long as it's a '58, I will set that on fire as well] Resistance is futile Emee

For what I need, I am sorry to say that your tones fall terribly flat. Sounds great though! Emee

Either you play interestingly or you don't. Modeling tech won't get you there, neither will analog. Modelers will cover things up more nicely though, at least from the modeling stuff I've had. And of the modelers I've had I also owned the DG-60, your DG-1000's little bro. Small world! Anyway, you can be a sonic space cadet with analog just fine, as well as with digital. I think the digital modeling stuff can on the surface be more complex, but it's far from 'more sophisticated'. -Ben |

Well, I know this is gonna sound really strange... perhaps heretical...
but I actually kinda like... BOTH! ![]() I have fun and get some good sounds (in my opinion) out of combining digital & tube gear, but I also appreciate and enjoy guitar straight into amp sometimes too! I have to play a wide variety of contemporary styles for church, but for fun and jamming I sometimes like ridin' the vol. knob while playing through a little amp. (someday I'm gonna get a Bruno Tweedy Pie or maybe a mini-wreck type amp just for pure self indulgence :AOK) P.S. I've still got my mint cond. Yamaha DG-1000 around here somewhere...

The clean stuff sounds really nice, but when you switch back to the bridge pickup it's very compressed and not very tasty at all. Then in the middle or so of the clip the sound just really goes to hell, like the camera is cutting out or clipping or something.
Hey, if it works for you that's all that matters. It's not for me though.

Been there....
I have gone down the digital road a couple of times in my playing career. It usually evolved out of the purchase of a really cool rack unit of some sort.
I have always come back to the basics however. Guitar w/ good pickups, Vintage (or boutique) tube amp, TS808 tube screamer, and Delay of some sort. I will also occasionally use a Chorus and a Wah. My days of reading manuals are OVER !! If I can figure out a pedal within 30 seconds, I don't want it. Having said that, its all in what YOU like and finding your own style and sound. I considered my rack mounted years as part of the journey that got me to where I am now. BTW, you are an excellent player!

If that floats your boat, but digital modeling is just the cheap, lazy way to get the sounds you'll never quite get with digital modeling. No but really, modeling is getting better, it still has too much missing information to give a truly 3/D effect.
At the namm show this year, in the BOSS booth there was this poor dude sitting there trying to convince passer-by's that this boss '59 bassman pedal through a JC120 sounded just as good as the '59 bassman RI he had sitting there. While the Boss pedal clearly had some characteristics the bassman did, with the A/B test switching between the two the sounds were night and day. I left there wondering who the guy pissed off to get that job... I mean it's got to be humiliating to have people walking away in disgust, shaking their heads saying "That don't sound like no '59 bassman". |
