Dr. Lonnie Smith's approach to playing changes

Back when he used to collaborate with George Benson (indeed, before he added the "Dr." to his name), some aspect's of Lonnie Smith's method were somewhat different from his current approach. In this regard, play especial attention to step 1 (see below).

But for many years now, Dr. Lonnie Smith's approach to playing changes can be summarized by the following:
  1. place turban on head
  2. play

...it's either a wrapped turban (tonic) or an unraveling turban (dominant)...

Cameron, I've heard you play, your turban playing tends to be very head-centered. Let me know when you can hear it on your shoulder.

I never said all turbans are the same, only that they can only have two FUNCTIONS:

Holding the hair or letting it go

HAIRY GOOD HAIRY GOOD

My work here is done.

I hair what you're saying

I wonder what George Turbanson would say about this.

That was real bad. Sorry GB

My work hair is done.

His album from last year, "Jungle Soul", is one of his best in ages. Includes an interesting rendition of "Bemsha Swing" with some unusual guitar work.

Nothing quite like the marraige of a B-3 and a guitar, I have to check out his new C/D. Who's playing guitar on it?. I was lucky to see Jimmy Smith at the Iridium a year before he died. Love B-3

Here's a review: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=22450

Two guitars, B3 and drums/percussion. No bass player in sight.

Him being from the east side of the states...I envision this little teeny squirrely voicing pronouncing "turban" as..."toy-bin"

Like Mike Tyson
