Mixing a "15 and a "12 cab
Anyone ever done it?
I used to run a 1x15" (EVM, Thiele box) with a 2x10" (SWR) and that combo did not seem to work for me; those two cabs seemed to fight each other. In the latest BP, Jonas Hellborg talks about his current setup, which is a 2x15" and a 2x12"; I'm think half that would be plenty for my purposes. I like the idea of having just the 1x12" for small gigs too. Just wondering if any other bass players had tried mixing these two speaker sizes onstage. /rick |

Do you have a "stereo" amp? (dual mono)
What's nice about having an amp that does that is that you can control the volume to each cab- for the voice you're looking to be most prominent. I'd imagine the 12 cab and the 15 would fight each other more (sonically) than the 15 and 10. That being said, I can't say that I've seriously worked with 12s in a bass application, but I'd really like to try some out.

I have a 12" Bag End that I like paired with a Coaxial 15" Bag End. Powered with a GK 800RB. This is a great sound, a little more present mids and highs than my normal 2 15" cabs.
I haven't had the 12" out on a gig, I like it in rehearsals.

Over on TalkBass, one of the guys with the mos amazing gear collections in the world went nuts describing his new rig a few years back.
He was talking about how he had sold off/traded in everything else cabinet-wise after getting a tiltback 1x12 with tweeter to go with his Bag End 1x15. And that it had great tone and enough volume for ant gig you could name. In fairness, I haven't heard his rig. But I DO know the sound of hsi preferred amp from when he did this. And it's a very clean, present sound. No mush, no sag. Definitely not an Ampeg kind of sound. If you want that, you want tens, as many as you can carry. But for the hi-fi, modern, forward in the mix sound, yes a 15 and a 12 is a good mix. Golden Boy had a good idea about independent volume control for the blend, though. |
