I actually found a brand new CS-336 plaintop at Alto Music in Wappingers Falls, NY for $1999 new, and they wanted $2399 for a flametop. Best price I've seen for one of these in a long time. But...when dealers like the aforementioned start carrying the 339s, I'd expect the price to be one of the lowest for a high end Gibson model in a long time. Is it possible we could see them below $1500 from select dealers???

My 336 has a '59 neck (Wildwood).

But yet, I read the 339 threads with great interest....

More props for Alto. I saw two 336s in the wall with $1999 price tags. They are a terrific shop. Their Middletown store is also quite nice.

Yep but that was a special order if I remember correctly and I believe they were a little more pricey than the regular 60s pencil thin neck.

The two for clean jazz- both would work but I would give the nod to the 335. They both would sing on the neck pickup but the 335 has just a bit of that smokey sound ( mellow overtone).

For funky strumming- the 339- just tighter & brighter sound in all positions- mid or bridge could get real funky.

LP thing- different but I prefer the 339. I always loved the Les Paul sounds on records - Mike Bloomfield - but I never could get a LP to sound that way when I played it. It always seemed to thick and compressed. I could never get it to the point of just breaking up; it always seemed to gobble up gain ( went from clean to dirty with no in between). I came to the conclusion - I just wasn't a Les Paul player.

The 339 has bite to it and is a lot more open sounding to me. I am able to get into that just breaking up solo sound ( which I am loving). There are definetly some overdriven sounds that only a Les Paul makes. So, I would not say it covers all the things a LP does but is a personal preference for me and my playing style.
I heard that the new 339s come shipped with the pickups sitting pretty high--you might try lowering them to get less overdrive sound, to taste, and that may help get the neck pickup sounding better for jazzy stuff.

and Congrats! My Cherry Red is due tomorrow!

Saw those 336's there. Definitely my favorite store (the larger Middletown store as well).

I was worried the neck pup on mine was too LOW..the bridge is relatively high...

A week ago MF had 339 Blems(?) listed. I pulled the trigger on a red with the 60\.030 neck.( apparently the only one) It was here on Monday, 5 days,,Out of Private Reserve.... Sealed COA, Warranty card-checklist, wrench, key
Two pinpoint size marks on the neck pup black plastic cover near the lower left screw, The GUITAR WAS FLAWLESS.. Still had the protective cover on the PG..Exterior of the case was without a mark..The standard inside over-glue globs and flakes, along with gaps around the sides as with most cases,,,

So a little hot melt.. or return case to Gibson for a new one?
I will go the hot melt....
$1379.00 DELIVERED... Now that's a deal

I love the idea of these but I had a excellent 50's neck 356 I had to sell because my big hands were cramped by the small cutaway. I'm guessing the upper fret access on the 339 is the same as the 336/356?
