How do these amp compete? Anyone prefer one over the other and why?

WOW GOOD QUESTION!

They are almost the same amp in that they cover the same territory, have a "similar" feel, similar volume.

I assume you mean the 2 channel Orange model. The Orange has a little more clarity and shimmer in the clean over the Budda - NOT a good or bad thing, just a taste thing for the user. The Budda is a little more spongy and reminiscent of that Class A feel people describe with Vox's. I always liken then Orange to a mini-Marshall in its mids and attitude. However, the Budda does get a smaller, spongy version of the "Brown Sound".

I would really say they are both similar but made with different recipes - kinda like 2 good restaurants having the same chicken dish ... lol.

You just have to try them both. I happen to like them both, but have much more experience with the Budda, as I have recorded with it a lot.

I've played the orange and I like the feel and the sound. It's not as warm as the ac30, (that brownsound) not a bad thing ...but still good. I liken the ad30 to the fender bassman somewhat.
I've heard the budda but have not played it. The cleans sounded good and the gain.
How would the gains on the amps compare?

Buddas gain up a hell of a lot.

Ugggh not to plug myself (I swear!) but check out my rock myspace at www.myspace.com/london77music and click on "Steal You Away" - the solos, the reggae clean skany rhythm are all the Budda. The choruses are the Budda along with a Shiva. I point it out to you because I wanted a grainier /gainier crunch in the choruses, and I would say the Shiva is some of the double tracking and size, but the modern aspect of the gain in there is the Budda's influence.

Downside do the Budda is I feel the bottom is not as full as it could be, and sometimes doesn't stand up to a band as well as I have felt the Orange does. Tonally and studio - it is amazing! This was not just my take, but the take of my friend/engineer who owns it.

I think G12H30s or Scumbacks would solve that issue.

BTW they DO sound good thru V30s no matter what people tell you!

I think they totally Gain up to EVH or Lynch levels on their own, esp using

gain wise the Budda is probably more similar to a Rocker series Orange amp. the Budda has alot more gain and chunk than an AD30 - 1 or 2 channel. AD30 is more classic sounding. the Budda SD's are capable of much more assuming you're talking about the current SD series II...otherwise nix everything I said cause I don't know jack about the 1st series SD's.
