Deluxe Reverb vs. Princeton - are the Tone Stacks the same ?
I'm getting serious about getting a more vintage toned amp...I'm thinking of the differences in the Dlx Reverb vs. Princeton (and thinking of the Dave Allan amps...Sweet Spot and Accomplice, definitely with a 12" speaker). Are the tone stacks pretty much the same or a big difference ?

I'm strictly going by memory here...so if anyone can supercede what I say, take what they say.
But if I recall, the only basic difference between the princeton and the DR is that the DR has that extra VTB channel, where the princeton has everything the Dr has but without that extra channel. ...and that the stacks are pretty much the same on the channels that are of 'direct' comparison... |

I've heard the same thing. I've also heard that most vintage Fender amps have such a similar preamp that you can make any sound like either. But I don't agree with that last statement.
IMO, based on ears only, is that they are similar. BTW, I've been drooling over an Accomplice myself!

Yes the tone stacks are the same.
The main differences (other than the lack of a "Normal" channel on the PR) between a DR and PR is the power supply (the DR has a choke), opticoupler trem on the DR vs bias vary on the PR, and the phase inverters are different. Allen amps are great, I built an Accomplice for a local musician, and he gets compliments on it all of the time. |

The tone stacks in the DR and PR are pretty much identical. The phase inverters are quite different.
I have an old PR and I , from time to time, think I should get a DR. Then I try one and find that it is too harsh (unless the Brite cap is clipped). Plus, it seems to break up very early, earlier than my PR. For me, I would consider passing DR and going directly to Vibrolux Reverb! |

OK, There you have it. Different type of trem and different PI certainly would make for a different feel... |

The PR trannies are significantly smaller (such that you can rebias a DR for 6L6s but don't try that with a PR), right?

One thing to remember is that Allen's amps are not direct knock-offs of Fender BF designs. The Sweet Spot, while based on the PR, has a choke filtered power supply and phase inverter mod to make it more like the bigger BF amps. So, comparing the Sweet Spot to a stock BFPR might not leave you with completely accurate conclusions, assuming that you chose the Allen amp over a stock vintage Fender piece.
