Celestion Classic Lead 80. More cut than Celestion V30s?

My rig for a while now is a Shiva head into an open back 2x12 cab with Vintage 30s. I NEVER thought I had any tone problem at all until now..

The lead guitar player in my just got a Egnater Mod50 (RIPPING amp, BTW) and an Egnater closed back 1x12 with a Classic lead 80.

I don't know if I'm just imagining things, but I SWEAR that his tone is cutting more than mine in a band situation. And it's not just the closed back. I can hear the difference in thunk between his cab and mine, and I'm fine with that. but...

Does the CL80 have more defined mids?

how would it sound if I had ONE V30 and ONE CL80 in my 2x12? A little mix and match? Would that yeild good results? Any phase issues when mixing speakers?

My Guytron CB 2x12 cab has just that- a CL80 and a V30. Sounds great and cuts right through.

Cool. That's good to hear that it's a combo that is actually seen out there...

I might have to get one to try it out. Perhaps I can dump the V30 into my Fender Combo...

The CL80 does NOT have more defined mids. It's way more even across the spectrum and the V30's cut like hell but might be slightly more directional. The changing of the speaker in this case won't help a 'cutting 'problem .. That's due to eq'ing , type of cabinet , etc.

I WILL SAY though that the Cl80 /V30 combination sounds great.
Good luck

Eric

+1

I will say the CL80 gives you richer cleans, but it has a sweet/bright top end thing that is kinda modern-ish and hifi to me and not as brown and rock n roll as a V30. YES, the V30 can be very brown, don't BS yourself lol - many albums have been done nice and warm with the V30. That's why I un-did this mix.

I would say try a G12H30, but it will give you much more old school crunch and a certain feel that isn't as creamy and "gainy" feeling as the sounds you seem to be admiring. IT's hard to put this in words.

I had all the mixes, and the Shiva with Greenbacks is the sweetest mids, G12-65's is a nice mids/with good lead voicing sound (not my fave on the cleans)[ these have less dB response so they aren't as loud], and the V30 just seems to work for everything. It's always clean, balanced, and gains up to taste as needed. Soundmen seem to love it, not that they ask what speaker it is, but they can dial you in easy.

The EGNATER is a little more gainy, and smoother than the Shiva. Egnaters use V30s or CL80s quite often, so its a similar voicing believe it or not, as far as the design working well with the speakers. I like Egnaters, but for pure tone would actually go towards the Shiva - esp the magical clean channel. Though, I love the gain channel.

So where am I going with all this rambling? lol

I think you should stand back, have someone else play your rig. You also seem to think your amp is too loud in your other "taming the Shiva's volume posts" - which leads me to believe you need to either listen to your rig from a distance OR ASK YOUR ENGINEER OR SOUND GUY.

I have so many opinions on my own tone til I stand back and hear a recording or see a video and say ooops shoulda just shut up and played my guitar, and ENJOYED MYSELF!

It sound as though you like your tone, you just want to crank more, and you feel like someone else is louder or sounding better. Ask your band. And TRY re-EQing your amp and ask your group if your volume is good. I played many gigs where I thought I wasn't cutting or loud enough, but I always ask a friend, etc. Then I see the video later and say to myself, damn I was one of the most stand out things in the mix. Stage monitors really aren't accurate.

If you don't mind more bite from your Shiva, try a Tung Sol 12AX7 in your V1, V2, or V3. If you want sweeter, more vintage miods, and a little less gain (perceived) try a JJ TEsla ECC083S in V2, or my fave is the Ei Elite gold in V2 or V3.

1973 Marshall, THANK YOU for the tons of info. You rock.

Yeah, I think I'm suffering a case of tone-paranoia. The V30s always sounded perfect to my ears ever since I got the amp. I think I just need to remember that just because my other guitarists rig sounds *different*, it doesnt mean it sounds *better*. Just different.

Heck, our tones probably compliment each other pretty well. I think I was just over-noticing his tone and not listening to my own enough.

+1 on the MAGICAL clean tone of the shiva. There is nothing like it. Love it.

OK. I think I'm gonna just go home, shut up, and PLAY.

I'm with Beej on this one, I also have a Guytron cabinet that I use the Warehouse CL80 a V30 clones in. I tried lots of speakers in this cabinet with Governors in there for a long time. I popped the Warehouse speakers in the cab just for kicks (I was going to sell them) and I was surprised when it actually sounded better to me.

What's nice about the speaker combo is the way they blend. The V30 has the upper mids and CL-80 has lower mids, together they realy fill out the sound nicely. I actually prefer the Warehouse speaker V30 clone as it doesn't seem as harsh to my ears.

Hi , I have the Warehouse Cl80 "CLONE" and I have regular CL80's (and have had the g12h-80's and the older g12-80's) and the clone doesn't sound like real CL80's though.. It sounds great and actually crunches more than real Cl80's.. I'm surprised it's marketed as a "CLONE" and it definitely is not a clone sonically. It's a great speaker too ... Just doesn't cut more than a v30! lol

+1 for having dissimilar sounding guitar rigs live, more balanced mix.

If your solo's aren't cutting through you could try an EQ pedal.
