Looking for that "Wall of Sound" Distortion

I am in the process of building a new board, and I am looking for an OD/distortion that will help me achieve that big "wall of sound" sound. I have purchased the Timmy and Klon to take care of my low gain OD/clean boost needs, but now I need a pedal that can open up and really hit hard.

It's been difficult to find a distortion/OD pedal that can give me both the nice crunchy power chords in the verses AND the huge, open sound when the choruses hit. I've found that some pedals are too compressed and others are almost too natural sounding (if that makes any sense).

Any suggestions? Please keep in mind that I have a Timmy and Klon on the board as well...any advice would be greatly appreciated!

There are just a few that I have tried that seem to fill that "wall of sound" need. Again, these are "in my opinion and to my ears"...

MI Audio Crunch Box
Keeley Modded Rat
Analogman or Keeley Modded DS 1
Fulltone OCD being boosted slightly with a OD in front (ie, like your Klon\Timmy)
FoxRox Zim

Of those that I've listed; the Zim was the most fun and versatile because you can swap Zim Cards internally to totally different tones! Hope that Helps.

One of the Skreddy Muff based pedals would be my choice.

Just yesterday, I tried a Toneczar OpenHaus.

That pedal redefined what I thought was "heavy" from a pedal.

It gets you Linkin Park from single coils with ease... and brutal death grind with humbuckers... huge huge HUGE low end thats never muddy. Low gain tones still sound great and not lackluster.
Set it to a heavy rock sound, and you can clean up with your volume control to a sparkly, slightly dirty tone.

What type of amp are you using and how do you have it set up? I typically run my amp just a little broken up (just enough where I can get good cleans by rolling back my guitars volume). An RC or AC Booster will get me the tone I think you're describing pretty easily. Honestly most tube screamer variants will too with an amp set like that.

Can it be a fuzz? The one pedal I've owned that made me think of a "wall of sound" was the Tonefactor Huckleberry.

I use the Pink Flesh and the Mighty Red for that. Depends on whether you want it to be a wall made of fuzz or distortion, but you can't go wrong with either.

I would go for a good fuzz pedal. When I think "wall of sound" I think fuzz.

Yeah, souped-up Muff style pedal is what you want:
  • Frantone The Sweet
  • Skreddy Mayo
  • J.Everman Ultra Drive
that kind of thing . . .
