Dr. Z Mazerati... DANG!!! Kind of a review......

Just picked up a used Mazerati 1x12 combo (Red) from a buddy on the Z board and DANG!!! I was absolutely blown away by the tone of that little beast.... You wouldn't believe that an amp with only 2 knobs and one 5751 preamp tube would sound this good, but it really does (there's also a 12ax7 tube for the phase inverter). I've got a Stangray now, and I didn't think I'd ever have another amp that could compete (if that's what you want to call it), but the Mazerati is in the same league as the Ray. The mids are a bit more defined/stronger, but not in a bad way.

Beautiful AC30-ish cleans, with more "meat" and fuller low end..and when you crank it up to about 10:00 (update, about 11:00-ish with new tubes) on the volume, you start getting a little "hair" on the tone, which is just beautiful! Some of that I can contribute to the Red Fang too. Turn the volume up to about 2:00 and you are in to some nice semi overdriven tones that are very complex sounding and full - while still retaining the nice big bottom end... even for a 1x12 combo. The best way to describe it is a fat "angry AC30".

So far in Dr. Z's, I've had a Prescription ES, Stangray, Maz Sr and now this Mazerati...... The Stangray is the best amp I've ever played through PERIOD (Z or not), but the Mazerati is right up there. I NEVER thought the day would come where I would have trouble choosing which amp I was going to take to a gig, I always thought it would be the Ray, but now I've got a tough choice (when I can't take both).

The Mazerati is probably one of the least known about Dr. Z amps, I couldn't find too many reviews on it anywhere except HC. I don't really even see it mentioned here on TGP that much either. If you get a chance, try out a Mazerati, you be glad you did.

FYI. It a 1x12 combo with a Red Fang speaker.

There's clips on the Z-board already of the Mazerati GT in the "sounds" section.

Tele jas...saw your post in the classifieds, did a search, and here I am. You got my attention. I'm so diggin' my Stang...thought for sure it would be a flipper, but it sounds so great.

So that Mazerati is a little thicker in the mids and breaks up quicker? Must I now go Maz hunting??

You said this above ....

You wouldn't believe that an amp with only 2 knobs and one 5751 preamp tube would sound this good, but it really does (there's also a 12ax7 tube for the phase inverter).

Actually you might like the amp even more if you swapped things back to the original design .... v1 is a 12AX7 and v2 is the 5751 phase inverter

Not played one myself, from what I've heard though they aren't a real clean amp and break up pretty early. But they supposidly clean up when you roll back your guitar volume (which I never do). I'd love to try one some day!

Oh and Myles.... I think you are correct, the 12ax7 is the preamp and 5751 is the Phase inverter. My bad.....

Its a fantastic amp. Seriously, clean to mean with a simple roll of the volume knob. Great with single coils and humbuckers as well. Cant say enough good things about this amp.
