Tone Quest has ruined me again... I just got done reading the new one with the article on Aiken amps. So I go to Aiken's web site to look around. Here I find on the artist page : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqMkvjN0wiw This guy is playing a dicontinued Aiken Sabre.
I've been a Fender guy most my playing days and lately I've been thinking there's more to life than Fender tone. Bam! ![]() I love the tone this guy is getting with a Marshall type amp. I don't want to lug around a head and 2-12 cab though. Where can I get that type of Marshall tone in a 1-12 combo with 2 channels and reverb. I don't care too much for the el-84 thing... Is it possible? I would be lovin' life! C'mon guys help me out here.

Used Aiken Invader either 18 or 30 watt should get you there.

The Sabre is undergoing a re-do and will be available again but I don't think it's going to have reverb ( too bad since there's a lot of guys who want that). The Invader probably won't do you any good because it has EL84's and only one channel. I love mine though.

The invader also was made in an 30 watt EL34 format....so you can get past the EL84's as desired. Although the amp is a one channel amp, it cleans up extremely well and yields some fantastic warm plexi cleans. It also takes pedals well....so the net of it is that you can roll back for the cleans, and use a clean boost to go heavier when desired....I was a channel switcher but don't miss having a 2nd channel at all. It's a fantastic amp with 2 knob reverb, built in attenuation, bias points, 2 modes of marshall flavor ali/plexi, and more. It was modeled after a 72 50w non master Marshall head.
The clip the OP referenced was recorded off the Sabre's gain channel, set to a lower gain setting, as opposed to being a pushed example of the fendery sabre channel...so, the Invader could be a good choice...i.e. it doesn't get as heavy as a sabre but the sabre wasn't set for high gain. A second alternative coming to mind is the Bogner Shiva which has the two channels, with dual independent reverb....many (including I) feel the gain channel of the Shiva is overly dark sounding although the cleans are nice. I would prefer the invader....and do since I sold my shiva and bought an invader which I still have. Someday I hope my invader sits next to his big brother, the Sabre....but I guess I'd have to get divorced and remarried before that would happen!

The classic Marshall sounds are so full of rich harmonic content that there is no need for reverb. It just gets in the way. If you are talking about clean mode, then that can be a different story.

After looking at some more options I may consider a "Non-Reverb" amp as well as a non-channel switcher. It's got to be a combo though. I am intriqued by the new Reinhardt JKC 33. Anyone play one or heard one yet? Will this amp get me in the territory of that Sabre sound in the You Tube clip? |

That's MightyGuru from right here on TGP. MONSTER chops, check out all his vids on YouTube. You can ask him personally how he got that tone, my bet is that its about 99% in the fingers though
![]() As far as amps to get close to that, I think any good Marshall-inspired combo would get you close. There's hundreds. Aikens, Bogners, Egnaters, Roccafortes, Germinos, etc. |
